So Much Fun It's Scary

November 3, 2008 at 9:30 AM | by egw | 3 Comments

The Halloween spirit turns up in a lot of odd places (we see you, dentist's office!) but nowhere was odder than seeing these balloon columns popping up everywhere at Dallas' Love Field last week. But given how seriously Love's main carrier, Southwest Airlines, takes the holiday, it only seems appropriate that some of the good cheer would spill over from Southwest HQ, which is very close to the airport. How close? We'll show you that and way, way more after the jump.

All The Dressed-Up Fun

Where: 453 West 17th, New York, NY
November 3, 2008 at 8:45 AM | by egw | 0 Comments

Back to being yourselves! Heidi Klum enjoys the one day a year she has license to be ugly as the goddess Kali at her 9th annual Halloween bash, held at NYC nightclub 1Oak. "Project Runway" winner Christian Siriano was there dressed as Cruella De Vil, Pink was a clown, and Heidi's husband Seal went as some kind of Fu Manchu overlord... we can't figure it out.

Cute couples made sure their costumes were a matched pair: Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon went to the party they hosted their party on Thursday night dressed as milk and cookies, and Hilary Duff somehow got boyfriend Mike Comrie to dress up like Brangelina with her. (Complete with American Girl brood!) And the "Today" show hosts mostly got together on a fairy tale theme, incorporating Pinocchio (Meredith), the Gingerbread Man (Al), Humpty Dumpty (Matt) and Cinderella (Ann).

And just like in the larger world, the default for Hollywood starlets was anything sexy: Lauren Conrad was a flapper at a party in Vegas (though we loved Lo's Little Red Riding Hood better!), former Danity Kane singer Aubrey O'Day was the Little Mermaid and Kim Kardashian dressed as Wonder Woman. But the costume that garnered the biggest "awww"s? Britney Spears' boys, who trick-or-treated with dad Kevin Federline as a pair of wee bumblebees.

Gary Kelly Plays "Sharp Dressed Man"

November 3, 2008 at 8:00 AM | by egw | 0 Comments

The biggest news coming out of Southwest Airlines' Halloween bash this year was what CEO Gary Kelly's costume would be. On Friday, we analyzed his choice of Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top--but today we have exclusive video of Kelly performing one of the Top's biggest hits, just after the jump.

A Close Reading Of Gary Kelly's Costume Pick

October 31, 2008 at 9:44 AM | by pbb | 0 Comments

Southwest's Chief of Wacky Getups is leading the troops in Halloween celebrations today dressed as Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top. Kelly definitely pulls it off, but when past outfits have included full face make-up and dressing in drag, a fake beard and a hat seem more than a little conservative.

Maybe the economy has him toning things down? It's still too early to tell if a recession will put the breaks on leisure travel, a big part of Southwest's business, but if it does, the carrier won't be able to fall back on fees as a way to earn some extra scratch.

Looking ahead to 2009, a potentially drawn out fare war with the new super-Delta at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International can't be an exciting prospect. And while the airline notes that its recent quarterly loss was more of an accounting issue than a business downturn, no one likes to lose $120 million.

Then again, it's just a costume.

Mrs. Will Smith Wants To Be A Superhero Too

October 31, 2008 at 9:20 AM | by egw | 1 Comment

In times like these we all need a hero: Jada Pinkett Smith goes with a classic--Supergirl!--at a Hollywood Halloween party earlier this week, while her daughter donned some kind of fancy witch costume. (Witches: Also a classic!)

In case you were planning to dress as Lindsay Lohan this year (and we know people who were), be aware: She's going as the biggest gag choice this year, the "Borat" of 2008, Sarah Palin. Her friends say she even got maybe-girlfriend Samantha Ronson to go as First Dude Todd Palin, which makes it slightly cute instead of dreadfully unoriginal. But it could be funny to envision a costume in which the Lohan-ness of Lohan just leaks out from under the Valentino suit and $500 shoes.

Four Presidents And The Contents Of Our 401(k)

October 30, 2008 at 8:45 AM | by egw | 0 Comments

Even before Halloween, the ladies of "The View" set aside their contemporary differences and were able to get their heads together on a theme: Famous presidents! See if you can guess all five, then read on for the answers.

Okay, from left to right, we've got Whoopi as FDR, Joy as Teddy Roosevelt, Sherri as Abraham Lincoln the penny, Elisabeth as a surprisingly dark-haired Ronald Reagan and Barbara as the father of our country, George Washington. Thomas Jefferson is totes hurt not to be represented.

The election-themed set coupled with the historical leaders is a clever dodge for "The View" to avoid actually talking about the 2008 candidates any more... Or is it? The scariest thing on the talk show Friday might be whose wig falls off first in a potential political tussle.

Who Wore The Egg Costume Best?

October 29, 2008 at 8:50 AM | by egw | 1 Comment

Eggstrordinary: How did Gwen Stefani and Katy Perry end up choosing the same, non-topical costume this Halloween? Stefani donned hers for a Halloween party in West Hollywood with husband Gavin Rossdale as a slice of bacon, while Perry paired hers with a halo (?) to go onstage at a show in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Even though they ended up with the same idea, we have to give the ladies credit for not picking a tired cliche. Here are five people you should NOT go as for Halloween:

Baldy Britney Spears: Sure, it was scary, but MTV is over it, and you should be too.

Michael Phelps: Hypothermia: Not funny.

The Joker: Displays an admirable commitment to face makeup, but if we have to hear people trying to do the raspy voice all night we're going to reverse course and go as the scary puppet from SAW.

Amy Winehouse: Neither scary, nor funny, just sad. (Sorry, Cindy Crawford.)

Sarah Palin: Much, much too scary.
