How Berlin Will Celebrate the 'Fall of the Wall's' 20th Anniversary

Where: Berlin, Germany
April 28, 2009 at 1:01 PM | by amandak | 0 Comments

This November will mark 20 years since the Berlin Wall came tumblin' down, and Berlin has figured out plenty of ways to celebrate, making 2009 the ideal year to visit this buzzing city.

For one, they're scrubbing what's left of the wall clean at the East Side Gallery - the largest remaining portion of the wall - and have invited all the artists who famously painted murals on the section to come back and repaint it. The wall will be cleaned and resurfaced first so that the new paintings should be more resistant to car fumes and vandals. Visitors can watch the artists in action and a grand reopening is planned for November.

Secret Birthday Party for Bridge

January 26, 2007 at 9:30 AM | by amandak | 3 Comments

With Australians all attending BBQs and fireworks displays today to celebrate their national day, it seems a sensible time to let you know that that classic Australian icon, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, will officialy celebrate its 75th birthday on March 18 this year. The Museum of Sydney has already opened an exhibtion titled "Bridging Sydney" showcasing the Coathanger's history, but more is to come.

What, exactly? Well, that's still a secret. Early February is marked as the time when information on the birthday celebrations will be released, and we're not sure if that's because it'll be so exciting we just won't be able to handle the news any sooner, or if they haven't quite got it organized yet. Since so many celebrations in Sydney Harbour in the past have been really pretty spectacular, it's probably worth waiting to sing Happy Birthday to the bridge.

Xmas in the city of Brotherly Love

In Philadelphia this evening? Pour a little whiskey into your Starbucks and just try to get Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas" out of your head--the holidays have begun! (Alcohol and Miss Carey. Is there any better--or more necessary--combination?) Tonight's the annual tree lighting in front JFK Plaza near City Hall. It starts at 5pm, so what are you waiting for?
