Travel Without a Hotel: AirBed & Breakfast
September 16, 2008 at 1:00 PM | 0 Comments

Bored to death of the routine of hotel living? Check out the newly launched AirBed & Breakfast.
The website offers listings of people across the world who have accommodations for travelers in their homes. Most times it's pretty modest, think a spot to sleep on the couch and some cereal in the morning. But often, AB&B users have very swanky places where you can lay your head.
Prices vary per night depending on the location, of course, but you're almost guaranteed to save money over a traditional hotel. The host ends up with 97 percent of the rate, and AB&B gets a small transaction fee when a stay is over.

Back of the Envelope Travel: Ithaca's Gorges... and Booze
August 23, 2007 at 10:34 AM | 0 Comments
Our Upstate NY Travel Map will get you there.

As the Northeast summer hits that part where the weather can hardly decide whether to be sultry and smooth or cool and crisp, a sure bet for enjoying either version is Ithaca, NY. Ithaca at this time of year is truly "gorges," at least if you take the advice the town's ubiquitous punning t-shirts. Luckily, the town backs it up with lovely gorges everywhere. Even the deepest aversion to wordplay can't diminish the beauty of a town where a wrong turn down any given street will leave you dwarfed by nature's majesty.
But you'll have to act fast as students are already filtering back in to crush the tranquil small town vibe with a tidal wave of emptied 30 packs and crushed red cups.

Ugly American Vs. Angry Irishman
September 14, 2006 at 9:43 AM | 0 Comments

Are Americans spoiled when it comes to Irish B&Bs, or are they the victim of unjust discrimination? That's the debate that's playing out in the pages of the Times of London. The paper listed the Green Gate as the "greatest little B&B in Ireland", which subsequently drew some American interest. Unfortunately, according to owner, Paul Chatenoud, some American guests were taken aback by the Spartan accommodations of the B&B and would cancel in rather obnoxious ways. Chatenoud retaliated by canceling the reservations of any Americans after that:
It's not me that doesn't like Americans, it's Americans that don't like me. I've recently had 10 American couples who decided, once they saw the B&B, they didn't like it. Most didn't tell me to my face; they said they were going into town for a drink, then called up and cancelled, refusing to pay. The cottage is exactly how The Sunday Times described it: remote and basic.Chatenoud also updated his website, which is now replete with warning about how simple it is, and that it's "the complete opposite of the American way of life". We guess that means he doesn't have Spectravision.
