Springtime in Montreal: The Best Bagels in The World
Can't swing a trip to Paris for the Spring? Jaunted Embed Shira Lazar gives us a tour of her home town of Montreal, a much cheaper but just as authentic French experience.
Yesterday we told you about one of the two treats you must have when visiting Montreal. That was poutine. Today, we are going to teach you about goodness of Montreal bagels.
Montreal bagels are made completely different than any other bagel in the world. They are hand-rolled, thinner, boiled, dipped in honey water and put in a fire oven the old-fashioned way.
They are also addictive! We paid a visit to Mount Royal Bagel Factory on Lucerne to get a sneak (bagel) peek of how their amazing bagels are made. Actually, anyone can see how they are made, as it is done pretty much right in front of you behind the counter.
We might have a bias since we grew up in Montreal, but we've lived in other big cities and we can say these bagels really are the best in the world.
Insider Tip: Another great classic bagel brand to try is St. Viateur which has three shops in Montreal.

World's Best Bagels? Manhattan May Beg to Differ
Members of the foodie blogosphere never hesitate to declare their local faves "the best (whatever) in the world." But the best bagel? Any claim is a recipe for a fight, whether you're partial to New York's Zabar's or to LA's Bagel Broker.
But according to a particularly passionate online fan base, the very best bagels can be found in... wait for it... Canada?
St.-Viateur Bagel isn't just the home of the best bagel in Montreal, but Washingtonian.com's Best Bites blog calls it the best in the world:
Smaller and lighter than their New York cousins and with a larger hole in the center, the bagels are artisanally handcrafted--no machine stamping--and baked in a wood-burning oven.
We have to admit we're a little skeptical, but Montreal does know what they're doing with the smoked meat and the poutine. Has anyone out there actually tried these bad boys?

Best Steamed Bagel Sandwiches in the US?

You are looking at what is, quite possibly, the best bagel sandwich on earth. This particular model is the Ham and Swisser--soaked in just the right amount of honey dijon mustard. Fantastic.
Where can you procure such an edible delicacy? Charlotte North Carolina. Yeah, we are serious. Owen's Bagels & Deli, a non-descript breakfast/lunch joint, makes these steamed bagel sandwiches.
The story goes like this--it is a husband wife shop. Geoff Owen and Missy Owen received a bagel steamer as a wedding gift from their former boss, Ned, the owner of the original Bagels & Deli in Oxford Ohio.
Now, "Owen" slings bagels down south giving patrons a reason to head to Dilworth, South End, Charlotte area.
Here is one of the testimonials from Owen's site:
"This is by far the best sandwich I have ever had." -- Kevin & Liz , Dilworth Yuppies
The best part? This family friendly deli is right next door to a place called Leather & Lace.
But forget all that, we are hear to tell you Owen's steamed bagel sandwiches are real...and they are spectacular.
