September 15, 2009 at 1:27 PM | by cmb | 0 Comments

With megastars like George Clooney and Oprah Winfrey touting their new projects at the Toronto International Film Festival each September, the Boston Film Festival, which kicks off this week, has traditionally been overshadowed. This year marks the 25th Anniversary of BFF which has an impressive line-up of over 30 films and 22 shorts that will be screened between September 18th and 24th. Here's how you can get the most out of the festival this weekend.

What To See:
This year, BFF is honoring Uma Thurman with the Film Excellence Award. Uma's new movie, Motherhood will open the festival on Friday, Sept. 18 at the Landmark Kendall Square Theatre in Cambridge before the official awards ceremony. The independent comedy is about a New York City mom who has no idea what challenges she is about to face while planning her 6-year-old daughter's birthday party. Tickets for the Motherhood screening are still available via Landmark Theatre for a mere $9.75.

Where to stay and eat, after the jump.

The San Fran International Film Festival Begins Tonight

April 23, 2009 at 12:54 PM | by kjb | 0 Comments

The 52nd edition of the San Francisco International Film Festival gets underway this evening, and it'll be celebrating movies through May 7. Plenty of locals will be getting their shot at famedom, as well as international filmmakers looking to wow the crowds with films that barely make sense—to us at least. Organizers have chosen “La Mission,” a story about the struggles that take place in San Francisco’s Mission District, to kick of the festival.

Robert Redford and Francis Ford Coppola will both be receiving awards next week at the Film Society Awards Night. If you want to watch, it’ll cost you $500 for the cheap seats—but at least it goes to charity. Evan Rachel Wood and Elijah Wood will receive Midnight Awards this weekend since they are young and have made the judges feel warm and fuzzy.

The fest actually has an impressive line-up this year including "What Doesn’t Kill You", a movie getting a lot of buzz despite the fact it was co-written by Donnie Wahlberg. Here’s a guide to attending this year’s festivities in Beantown.

Where to Stay:

Most of the films are being screened at the AMC/Loews Boston Commons, 175 Tremont St. The Lenox Hotel offers luxury accommodations starting at $245 a night, just a few blocks from the theater. You can even request an upgrade to a hypo-allergenic room for an additional $24.

Today, The Philadelphia Film Festival and Cinefest 09 kicks off in Philadelphia. The 12-day festival includes several special events like awards ceremonies honoring Jeff Daniels and Alfre Woodard and Danger After Dark, a collection of the most horrifying genre films from around the world. In addition, Daniels will be attending a screening of his latest, The Answer Man, which also happens to be the opening film at the Sonoma International Film Festival next week.

Where to Stay:
You don’t have to worry so much about the cost of tickets to the festival because you can get a hotel room in the City of Brotherly Love for only a dollar a night. That’s right, The Alexander Inn is offering $1 rooms, Thursday-Sunday, through May 21st. Of course, there are stipulations. The rooms will only be confirmed with advanced reservations on a first-come, first-serve basis for the first night of the guests' stays and you may only make one reservation for one room during the promotion. January 8, 2009 at 1:26 PM | by cmb | 1 Comment

The Palm Springs International Film Festival has been hiding in the shadows of another famous January fest for nearly 20 years but it looks like some star wattage is helping it come into its own. Tonight the festival officially opens with a screening of "Last Chance Harvey", starring Dustin Hoffman, and ends Jan. 19 with a "best of the fest" star-studded event.

Tuesday night, the PSIFF annual gala honored Sean Penn, Dustin Hoffman, the cast of "Revolutionary Road," and director Gus Van Sant. The gala also drew A-Listers Anne Hathaway, Dakota Fanning, and Amy Adams. But be prepared, if you are going to be surrounded by celebrities, you may be tempted to live like one.
