Southwest Airlines Gets a New Reality TV Show in 2012, Just Like Snooki

November 21, 2011 at 12:44 PM | by | Comments (0)

If you're passing through concourse A or B at Baltimore/Washington International Airport this week, you may find yourself in front of a camera crew.

TLC is expected to begin filming a new untitled TV show about the inner workings of BWI's largest carrier, Southwest, today. The new series will follow BWI's expansion and the day-to-day drama that happens behind the scenes at Southwest.

"It's a good opportunity to showcase BWI and the region," said Jonathan Dean, airport spokesman. "With BWI as one of Southwest's largest markets, it makes sense to shoot it here," he added.

$100 Million in Upgrades Coming to BWI

November 15, 2011 at 10:03 AM | by | Comments (0)

Your next trip through or to Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport might just be a little more enjoyable, as airport officials are headed to the ATM to withdraw some cash for a major airport upgrade. In total, the plan is to spend like $100 million on renovations and updates, as the airport continues to gain passengers each and every month.

With all the travelers passing through the airport there’s a need to get bigger and better before it’s too late. Expansions will take place over the next 18 months—at least that’s the plan. New stuff includes moveable walkways connecting Concourse B and Concourse C, so you’ll never have to hustle off to your gate again. There’ll be more bathrooms, better gate areas, and they’re promising around 8,500 square feet of new shops and restaurants.

TSA Rolling Out 'Gingerbread Man' Scanners at Select Airports

August 12, 2011 at 1:50 PM | by | Comments (2)

TSA has finally begun deploying the Gingerbread Man scanners that we started telling you about last February. The scanners detect suspicious objects and project them onto androgynous, human-shaped cutouts, the upshot being that they're as effective as current full-body scanners but without all the "having people see you naked" discomfort.

Reports are surfacing that the scanners have already been deployed to BWI and TPA.

The same rules apply to these scanners as to previous full-body scanners, which is to say that you get pulled aside if the machines detect a suspicious object or you refuse screening. But we expect, at the very least, that less people will opt out of scanning now that their actual images aren't being viewed by some unknown agent in some locked room.

Lace Up Your Sneakers For Another Airport Run This September

July 13, 2011 at 9:35 AM | by | Comment (1)

At this point you should already be training for the 2012 edition of the JFK Runway Run, but if you need some motivation in between there’s always the option to head down to Baltimore.

Sure you might need to pound the pavement a little more this week or crank up the treadmill, but it’s all worth it for a chance to run loose at another airport. This time, the people act like airplanes at Baltimore/Washington International Airport on September 25. That’s plenty of warning to adhere to that running and exercise regimen that you promised yourself that you’d stick to back in like January.

BWI's Slick Public Airport Lounge is Now Open, Free WiFi and All

May 9, 2011 at 4:02 PM | by | Comments (0)

This last Saturday, travelers going through Baltimore Washington International Airport may have spotted something a little different in the terminal; the pay-access Airspace lounge opened, giving everyone an opportunity to hang out in a posher environment than the basic gate area, plus extras like free WiFi and workspace areas.

Airspace, which costs $17.50 per person per day, is located in Concourse D at BWI. That means if you're flying AirTran, Cape Air, Continental, United or US Airways, that you've got another option besides sitting on uncomfortable seats amongst crying babies and teenagers in Juicy Couture sweatpants and Uggs while hugging your Sbarro sandwich.

Of course, if you're carrying an American Express Platinum Card, you and your guests get access to Airspace for free.

US Airports Need More Pay Lounges for Regular People and 'Airspace' is Working on It

March 22, 2011 at 9:01 AM | by | Comments (0)

We've popped a squat in many, many airport lounges (see photo galleries of alot of them here), but it's simply impossible to be a frequent flyer with elite status on every airline and alliance so that you've never left outside the lounge. Thus, we're not above paying our way into airline lounges; want to use a Delta SkyClub or American Airlines Admirals Club? That'll be $50.

International airports have long known the value of allowing regular (economy—shhh) passengers pay to gain access to lounge benefits; Hong Kong has an excellent pay lounge within a stone's throw of the swish Air France and Virgin Atlantic lounges. Tokyo-Haneda just opened a pay lounge so fine that we'd definitely rate it higher than any Delta or American lounge, and it costs only $12.25 for access. Just look at it! It's beautiful

Anyways, what we're getting around to saying is that US airports are finally realizing the potential for such lounges, and a promising concept called Airspace is due to open at Baltimore-Washington Airport as soon as this May.

Next Stop, Havana: Eight More US Airports Get Go Ahead to Fly to Cuba

Where: Havana, Cuba
March 9, 2011 at 9:15 AM | by | Comments (0)

Oh wow. Steps towards the re-opening of Cuba are coming quicker and quicker now, and the latest advance is a huge one: Eight new US airports have been given permission to operate charter flights to Cuba. It was only back in January that Obama and Congress re-allowed educational and religious groups to travel to Castro's island, but their departure points were limited to NYC, Miami and Los Angeles.

With the news that eight more airports—deemed to have sufficient customs and immigration facilities—can now begin their own travel agency-arranged flights, you can expect to see many more "My Cuba Trip" photo slideshows from your neighbors. The new airports are: Chicago-O'Hare, Baltimore, Dallas-Fort Worth, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Tampa, Atlanta and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Southwest Intensifies Boston Turf War With JetBlue And AirTran

Where: Boston-Logan Airport [map], Boston , MA, United States
October 15, 2009 at 5:33 PM | by | Comments (0)

The outlook for the 2010 airline industry is unremittingly bleak, but you wouldn't know it from the way that Southwest is acting. The low cost carrier is adding 104 flights to its spring schedule. In the process they're turning the Boston turf war they started with JetBlue and AirTran into a full-blown bloodbath:

Baltimore Airport Not Hip to Free WiFi

May 5, 2009 at 2:48 PM | by | Comments (0)

Last week Baltimore celebrated the unveiling of the first TSA checkpoint in the country -- and by celebrated, we assume they mean "did nothing whatsoever to mark the occasion." What they should have done was sprayed it with some ceremonial Purel, since the first cases of swine flu were also officially announced last week, but that might have caused more panic than it was worth.

If you failed to get that first special checkpoint a present -- perhaps, a 3.3-ounce bottle of poison -- you still have time to send it a proper e-card, but you'll have to pony up $7.95 for WiFi access in the terminal. If only the TSA would pony up for that.

So what's your favorite TSA checkpoint? Sarcasm fully installed, tell us what airport has the best or worst wireless access. No one has to know it was you.

JetBlue 'Protects Its Turf' By Adding Boston-BWI Flights

April 23, 2009 at 2:43 PM | by | Comments (4)

Once upon a time, America's Low Cost Carriers were united in fighting against the big bad airlines by providing cheaper fares and a better flying experience to passengers. Now, the LCCs have turned on each other. And it's not pretty. Actually, wait. Yeah, it is pretty especially if you want cheap flights.

JetBlue not only announced some unreal one-way airfare deals from its SoCal aiports ($99 Burbank to NYC, $29 Long Beach to Vegas) but now The Baltimore Sun reports that JetBlue has just added nonstop service from Boston to Baltimore/Washington International (BWI.) No offense to the folks in Baltimore but this is purely a move to piss off Southwest which has also announced plans for Boston flights in the fall.

One airline analyst said JetBlue is probably trying to protect its turf in Boston. Southwest could also serve people in Florida and other destinations from those same flights, further threatening some of JetBlue's territory.

The flights will begin in September and fly four times a day. And the introductory rate will be $10 cheaper than Southwest's introductory fare. And let's not forget AirTran is already on that route. But if you can choose between SW and JB why would you ever choose AT? No word on whether Virgin America will add BWI to its new Boston gates just yet.

Tweeting Without Sucking: Our Tips For BWI

March 30, 2009 at 2:46 PM | by | Comments (0)

Who doesn't want to give Baltimore a leg up? Charm City has enough to contend with in the unflattering portrayals drawn by everyone from urban-renewal reporters to "The Wire," so residents like Michael Phelps and (guilty?) David Simon are determined to show its lighter side. But you know what would really impress us about Baltimore? An airport Twitter account that doesn't suck.
