Austrian Airlines, United and Southwest Lead This Week's New Route News

May 24, 2013 at 8:20 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Austrian Airlines:
We try not to pick favorites when it comes to the week’s new routes, but we just might be most excited about the new option that’s heading to Chicago-O’Hare. This week Austrian Airlines filled up the tanks for the first time, as they started flying between Chicago and Vienna.

In case you’re interested in what they’re using to head across the Atlantic, it will be Boeing 767-300ERs doing all of the heavy lifting. With their hub at Vienna International Airport the fun just doesn’t stop in Austria, as connections will get you to here and there over in Europe as well.

· Lufthansa:
It’s been about a week since the first planes started heading back and forth, as Lufthansa is now flying from Vancouver all the way over to Munich. It’s Airbus A330s that are doing all the flying, as the carrier adds another option to go alongside their service between Vancouver and Frankfurt.

According to the press release this is the only international long-haul route Lufthansa is adding to the scheduled this year, so you might as well go ahead and enjoy this one. We’re not really sure if this is the best flight for a long weekend, so go ahead and ask for that time away from the office—you’ll need it.

From Wings to Wheels: Four Cars That Look Like Airplanes

April 26, 2013 at 11:17 AM | by | Comments (0)

The usual way of going about getting on a flight is to drive a car to the airport and then hop on a plane. Well, some airlines are hoping that cars will help you to get on airplanes in another way—through advertising. Of the top of our head, here's four airlines who've dabbled in painting up pairs of wheels to match planes:

American Airlines' London Taxi

The days of black London taxi cabs are nearly over as the cars become ad territory. The latest brand to smack their logo on cabs is American Airlines, in their big push to introduce both sides of the pond to their new 777-300ERs.

We find it exciting to walk through an airport and catch a glimpse of a specially painted airplane gliding by the windows, or even sneak a peek at vibrant liveries while taxiing to our gate in a foreign land. Thankfully the airline world is chock full of super quirky, stand-out airplane designs and, while some make us raise an eyebrow and tilt our head, all bring a smile and make us reach for our camera.

Alaska, Austrian Airlines and Frontier Bring Plenty New Route News This Week

November 16, 2012 at 9:20 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Alaska Airlines:
To us it’s pretty clear that Alaska Airlines may like Hawaii even more than Alaska. They're about to send even more love out to the islands, as once again they’ve announced another nonstop flight over to Hawaii. This time it looks like San Diego will be getting a flight right over to Kauai—Lihue to be specific.

The flights will start up on June 7 of next year, and will be a nice compliment to the other flights out of San Diego to the islands of Maui and Oahu. That’s not the end of the news, as Alaska Airlines is also linking San Diego with Boston beginning on March 29. They might be totally different destinations, but if you’re in San Diego both Hawaii and Massachusetts are now one flight closer.

· Austrian Airlines:
It’s time for yet another new nonstop flight over to Europe. The plan is to connect Chicago with Vienna beginning on May 17, 2013, five times per week. Boeing 767s will be doing the heavy lifting across the Atlantic, and the flights will have lie-flat beds up in the business class cabin as well as a new in-flight entertainment system in both cabins. In total there will be around 26 nonstop flights between North America and Europe next summer, so no matter when you need to go—Austrian Airlines has got you covered.

Seven Secrets Inside Lufthansa's Exclusive First Class Terminal

Where: Frankfurt International Airport, Frankfurt, Germany
October 23, 2012 at 3:21 PM | by | Comments (0)

SPOILER ALERT. If flying First Class is on your to-do list and you'd rather "open the gift" of the First Class Terminal when that day comes, stop reading now!

It's an almost mythical place, the First Class Terminal (FCT) at Frankfurt International Airport. In the darkness of the autumn evening, just before the last flights depart ahead of the 11pm curfew, a little building just off of Terminal 1 glows with the golden crane of the Lufthansa logo.

We've previously shown you all around the spaces and even detailed what whiskey to order, but looking a little closer there's far more to explore.

Pick the Best Whiskey at Lufthansa's Frankfurt Airport First Class Terminal

Where: Frankfurt International Airport, Frankfurt, Germany
June 1, 2012 at 10:09 AM | by | Comments (0)

Did you know that there's a whole separate building, just off the tarmac at Frankfurt Airport, that caters only to First Class passengers? Wait—it's even more specific than that; you've got to be flying First Class on Lufthansa or Austrian Airlines or Swiss Air and have enough time on your hands to enjoy the amenities of this special building, such as nap rooms, bathrooms with showers and and (gasp!) soaking bathtubs.

Hopefully you did already know this, because we've taken you through it with a photo gallery and this time we just want to know what's good to drink up in here.

Airlines Actually Increase Checked Bag Limits, Thanks to the 'Piece System'

May 14, 2012 at 9:32 AM | by | Comments (2)

With all of the drama and outrage about certain airlines decreasing baggage limits, charging for extra baggage, and even (over)charging for carry-on baggage, here is a story that make you feel excited to fly. Yes, Virginia, there is happiness in flying.

Believe it or not, there are airlines that don't nickle and dime their passengers by charging to check a bag in the belly of the plane. And there are even airlines that have chosen to get even more liberal with how much they allow you to stuff in one suitcase. Or even up to three suitcases. We can't be more excited for these new rules.

United, WestJet and Copa Airlines Plan New Routes to Here and There

February 3, 2012 at 7:52 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· WestJet:
If you haven’t had the opportunity to check out what WestJet has to offer, this may change in 2012 as they bring new flights down to the nifty fifty. Of course they already have cheap flights to here, there, and everywhere in and around Canada, but now they're prepping to take on New York-LaGuardia.

Live, in-flight television will be yours to enjoy on seven new nonstop flights between NYC-LaGuardia and Toronto beginning June 4. A couple weeks later they’ll be boosting the flight frequency up to eight flights, so they definitely mean business when it comes to serving the flying public between New York City and Toronto. They even just launched a codeshare deal with Delta, so you can continue on aboard Delta until your final destination.

Virgin Atlantic, JetBlue and United Airlines Announce New Routes to Warm Destinations

June 17, 2011 at 8:41 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Virgin Atlantic:
Unfortunately we’ll be waiting a little bit for this new route to take flight, but we’re still pretty excited that Virgin Atlantic is looking to head into Mexico. The new option will link London with Cancun, and this will be the airline’s 33rd destination around the globe. Things are scheduled to start up on June 12 of 2012, and the new flights will run just two times per week. They’ll be using Boeing 747s to get the job done on this new route, and they’re planning on splitting things into three different cabins—start saving up your pence for a chance to ride in one of the upper class suites.

· Southwest Airlines:
They’re busy gobbling up AirTran, but that doesn’t mean that Southwest Airlines doesn’t have a little time to add some new options to its route network. The free checked baggage airline just added three nonstop options into and out of Denver from Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, and Newark-Liberty. None of these cities are new to the Southwest family, but the ability to connect a little closer to the West Coast should improve the trip for those looking to make the journey across the country. After all, one connection is always way better than two.

Free Stuff Alert: Austrian Airlines Takes to the DC Streets to Give Away Coffee and Flights

April 25, 2011 at 4:14 PM | by | Comments (0)

Hey—would you like to fly to Austria for free, or at least score a complimentary cup of some nice Austrian coffee? Apparently Austrian Airlines is putting some pilots and chefs out on the street of Washington DC and New York City these next couple weeks to get people thinking about Vienna, via their tastebuds.

First up is Washington DC. Starting today, "dashing pilots" will dispense free Julius Meinl coffee from rocketpacks, stationed in high-traffic areas around the city. They'll also tell you how to enter to win a pair of tickets direct from either DC or NY to Vienna.

Here's the full schedule of where to find them in DC, April 25-May 1:

New Airline Routes Head to Eastern Europe, Wisconsin, and Even Baghdad

April 22, 2011 at 9:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Finnair:
If you’re looking for a different European experience this summer, maybe Finland is worth a visit. Finnair is bringing back its nonstop service between Toronto and Helsinki, beginning on May 26, five days a week through the beginning of September. Even if Finland isn’t your final destination, the flight is timed so that you can connect to around 50 other destinations in Europe. For those located in the nifty fifty, don’t forget that American Airlines is launching a Helsinki option from Chicago beginning this May—they’re buddies with Finnair in the oneworld airline alliance.

· Delta:
Summer is just around the corner, or at least that’s what we keep telling ourselves. Delta is getting right to start-up all kinds of seasonal service starting on June 1, so we wanted to pass along just a few of the destinations that are accessible from New York-JFK. Budapest, Zurich, and Kiev all become nonstop options at the beginning of June, but act quickly, as service wraps up on October 29. There’s similar season service from the Big Apple to Reykjavík and Malaga, Spain as well.

Can Itsy Bitsy Smart Car 'Airplanes' Convince You to Fly Biz Class on Austrian Airlines?

August 26, 2009 at 1:54 PM | by | Comments (0)

Have you ever flown Austrian Airlines? We haven't because we don't often think of Vienna has the gateway for our European vacations. And usually, we're frantically trying to make the most of our miles accumulated on domestic airlines like American and Continental.

But in an effort to persuade people like us, Austrian Airlines has unveiled its Smart Car "Airplanes" to create awareness about their business class services, calling it the "smart ride to Europe."

The Smart Car "Airplanes" will be cruising throughout New York and Washington, D.C. for the next month (first NYC; then after Labor Day, DC.) As an added bonus the cars will be handing out free bottles of cold water to folks passing by.
