Travel Video: Feeding Sharks at AQWA

Where: Hillarys Boat Harbour, Perth, WT AU, Australia
May 22, 2007 at 9:38 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

You know we have a love/fear relationship with sharks here at Jaunted, and AQWA just intensifies that bond.

It might look kinda like a misspelt word but AQWA is the abbreviation for the Aquarium of Western Australia on the northern coast of the city of Perth. First opened in 1988, it was pretty cutting edge at the time and still has the biggest aquarium and underwater tunnel in Australia--no mean feat for a country obsessed with water and whatever comes with it. AQWA also proudly advertises that it has "the world's largest collection of Western Australian marine life" but that's kind of like saying the White House has had the largest number of American presidents sitting in it.

But back at AQWA, the fish and other sea creature displays--living coral reefs, sharks, rays, turtles and seals--are split into 5 zones to reflect the different kinds of ecosystems along the Western Australian coast. There are also touchpools and rockpools where you can get hands-on with some fishy fellas, and there's also the opportunity to dive with the sharks if you need a bit of extra excitement. Or it could be a chance to feed your annoying travel companion to the sharks ...

Dolphin Handshakes For Nothin'

Where: Singapore
November 1, 2006 at 9:01 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

Getting something for nothing always appeals to us. So when we discovered that entry to the Singapore Underwater World includes a free entry ticket to the Dolphin Lagoon on the other side of Sentosa Island, we were pretty pleased.

The process is all simple enough: when you've finished ogling the glowing jellyfish at Underwater World, hop on a free shuttle bus outside and get scooted over to Dolphin Lagoon. Follow the crowd in through the turnstile and if you can find a space in front of the lagoon, take a seat.

A couple of beautiful dolphins will be put through their paces and lucky audience volunteers get to wade into the water (too bad if you're wearing your Sunday best) and touch them. The routine is designed to include:

a series of interactive, feeding and training sessions specially designed to demonstrate their natural ability of tail-walking synchronization.
But there's a lot of ball tossing and hoop jumping going on, and we're not sure if that's okay. We know dolphins are intelligent, but is shaking hands really a natural wild behavior? Decide for yourself, or pay extra to book your own swim-time with the great beauties, and try your own wild behavior out on them.

Singapore From Underwater

Where: Pantai Cenang, Langkawi, Singapore, 07000
October 30, 2006 at 9:47 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

There are aquariums across the world all claiming to be the best for some reason or other. Singapore's Underwater World on Sentosa Island describes itself as Asia's largest tropical oceanarium (fair enough, if you want to get technical), and does include a reasonable collection of crabs, glow-in-the-dark jellyfish, some sharks, a dugong and run-of-the-mill fish too.

But it's 25 years old and it looks like it. If you've been to another aquarium--Osaka Aquarium comes to mind--you might be disappointed. The travelator that should zoom you round the aquarium tunnel is a little narrow; the glass is a little scratched and hazy and the fish--well, we're sure we saw one frown at us.

That Seals the Deal

March 31, 2006 at 11:10 AM | by AVB | 0 Comments

April marks the 75th Anniversary of the Monterrey History and Art Association's founding, and for the next few months the city will be celebrating. The Association put together an exhibition called "75 Treasures in 75 years", which contains artifacts from the city's 236 year history.

History is great, but Monterrey is famous for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. At the moment, they are pushing their Sea Otter exhibit--here's the webcam--but we have a special place in our hearts for the Monterrey Bay sea lions at the nearby Fisherman's Wharf. We know it's way touristy, but we don't care. Wouldn't the South Street Seaport be greatly improved by sea lions?
