Where To Find a Dance Party in DC

DC is widely ridiculed for being a town full of squares, and to be honest, from about 8am to 6pm things can get pretty dorky here. But that just means there's more steam to blow off at the end of the day. In the second outing of Jaunted's Apolitical DC series, we're looking at Washington's surprisingly diverse dance party scene. With an enthusiastic young population and little of the dollars-and-drama it takes to go clubbing somewhere like NY or LA, these are our favorite District spots to dance the dorkiness off.

Black Cat: This live music standby reels in plenty of big-name indie bands, but it's perhaps best loved for Mousetrap, the District's biggest Britpop dance party. On the second Saturday of every month (that's this weekend), DJ Mark takes over the mainstage and spins anything and everything UK—from Morrissey to Pulp to the Streets to Kaiser Chiefs.

Lighting Up (Legally) in the Nation's Capital

We've heard a lot about how DC is getting hip, but it's left us wondering why most Washington events we read about are still along the lines of Congressional cocktail parties and power-lunches. Just because they're Democratic now doesn't make them all that hip.

But DC has a lot more going on than just Obama-mania, so we're gonna start taking a look at Apolitical DC: the best ways to spend a weekend in Washington with minimal risk or stumbling into a heated late-night debate about the federal budget.

First up is the antithesis of the cigar-chomping, smoked-filled room, good ole boys clubs: hookah bars. Cigarettes at bars are long gone in DC, but these specialty purveyors still have an exemption.
