The Cat's Out of the Bag: How 'Grumpy Cat' Really Arrived to Austin for SXSW

March 15, 2013 at 9:59 AM | by | Comments (0)

We call bullsh*t on TMZ.

Earlier this week, attendees of Austin, Texas' SXSW festival and, by extension, the entire internet, got in a huge uproar over the VIP treatment and attention paid to one festival attendee in particular. That attendee was a cat—the meme-famous "Grumpy Cat."

Grumpy Cat (whose real name is "Tardar Sauce," or "Tard" for short), headed to Austin for several days to do some promo work for Friskies and pose with legions of adoring fans, some of whom waited in line for hours just to get a Facebook-worthy photo with the naturally frowny kitty.

TMZ pounced on the story, blowing it up with an "exclusive" in their characteristic way, claiming "Grumpy flew first class ... and she's been living it up ... with her own, full-time assistant to brush her, an endless supply of Friskies as well as other treats, bottled water and her very own room at a four-diamond hotel ... king-sized bed included."

17 Travel Cats Sitting in Suitcases

March 11, 2013 at 10:42 AM | by | Comments (0)

Photo

As regular readers of Jaunted know, every Wednesday we take some time out to feature a Travel Cat, defined as a cat (usually a stray) who has found for himself somewhere awesome to live in this world. Maybe that's in Istanbul's Hagia Sophia or on St. Maarten's Maho Beach, these kitties sure have the life.

Submissions for Travel Cat come to us via Twitter, email and--most importantly--Instagram, where we started the #TravelCat hashtag. Through this hashtag, Instagrammers share photos of cats they've spotted around the world, but there's also a lot right inside their own homes, apparently trying to go on vacation as well. We've gathered up all of these "armchair Travel Cats" in Buzzfeed-y style and, without further ado, here they are:

Head to Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo to Pet a Kangaroo and Kiss a Koala

Where: 1638 Steve Irwin Way, Beerwah, Queensland, Australia, 4519
February 7, 2013 at 10:33 AM | by | Comments (0)

February marks the birthday month for Australia's most famous conservationist, Steve Irwin. There might be no better way to celebrate the life of the zoo-keeper than to head off to his very own zoo, aptly named, Australia Zoo.

Located about 60 minutes north of Brisbane, the 100-acre park was originally started by Steve's parents as solely a croc and reptile park. In 1992, Steve took ownership of the zoo and he escalated it to become one of the best zoos in the country, featuring a unique 'Crocoseum' for putting on demonstrations for visitors with live crocodile hand-feedings and a full animal show.

The TSA's Newest Security Measure? Puppies.

February 6, 2013 at 5:31 PM | by | Comments (0)

The TSA has, of course—famously and aggressively, though not always successfully—been moving toward what it calls "risk-based security." The agency would like to get to a place where not every passenger goes through the same procedures, partly because that seems smart but also because they're tired of having to listen to everyone complain about how they treat grandma the same way they treat 25 year old males.

Sometimes the changes take the form of more screening. Sometimes they take the form of less screening. In the context of today's story, we can't figure out exactly which direction the agency is moving. We did however notice that there were puppies involved. Puppies!
