Everyone from Alaska Airlines to US Airways Deals Up New Routes This Week

September 7, 2012 at 9:03 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Alaska Airlines:
There’s a brand new option between Portland—the one in Oregon—and Washington, DC, as Alaska Airlines just started flying between the two cities. The new flights will link the Pacific Northwest with Reagan Washington National Airport. Things are scheduled to depart from Portland around 9:30am local time, and the Boeing 737s are set to touch down over in Washington around 5:40pm local time. Apparently this is the only nonstop flight between the two airports, so expect to pay a little bit of a premium if you’re looking to cross the country with Alaska Airlines and their new flight.

· Singapore Airlines:
New daily service is soon arriving in Myanmar, as Singapore Airlines is planning to link Singapore with Yangon beginning on October 28. The new flights are done thanks to a little assistance from the airline’s regional buddies over at SilkAir, so don’t except Airbus A380s on these routes. However, Singapore Airlines will operate certain flights, and they’ll be using some Boeing 777s to boost the number of seats available between the two cities. It sounds like the flights are still subject to government approval, so you’ll have to wait a little bit to book your tickets.

Pack Up and Drink Up: Alaska Airlines to Check Wine for Free

August 23, 2012 at 9:33 AM | by | Comments (0)

Vineyards and wineries just haven’t been the same ever since liquids at the airport became illegal contraband. Sure you could always check your souvenir bottles, but there’s always those pesky baggage fees—not to mention you need to pack it up all snug and tight. Alaska Airlines isn’t going to pack your bags for you, but if you’re flying out of certain cities they’ll be happy to check all your wine bottles and they’ll do it for free.

As part of a clever tourism campaign known as “Taste and Tote,” Alaska Airlines will be offering to check one case of wine at no charge to its passengers. Participating airports are in Washington State and include spots like Walla Walla, Yakima, and Pasco/Tri-Cities.

WestJet, Delta and United Pile on the New Routes This Week

July 27, 2012 at 9:39 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· WestJet:
It’s already time to start thinking about the cooler months up north, because it’s important to know where you’re headed when the weather turns sour. That’s why WestJet is already thinking about where cool Canadians will want to visit this winter, as they’re preparing to add a few new flights.

If all the government stamps and seals are obtained it sounds like they’ll be heading to Antigua, Curacao and Liberia, Costa Rica this winter. All the flights will do their thing to and from Toronto Pearson International Airport. The flights won’t be a daily option, but there will be at least one flight per week to get you to the warmer waters of the Caribbean when you’ll need it most.

· United:
Last week we mentioned all kinds of new options heading in and out of Chicago, but this week we’re sharing the details about the new United flights doing their thing from Denver. No big wide body jets serving exciting international options, but we can’t complain.

Shreveport, Louisiana will get some new nonstop flights starting on August 28, and Grand Forks, North Dakota will also become an option beginning on October 3. The always comfortable 50-seat regional jet will be doing the heavy lifting between these new city pairs, so ensure you thoroughly stretch your legs before boarding.

Alaska Airlines Brings Do-It-Yourself Bag Tags to Sea-Tac

July 24, 2012 at 9:08 AM | by | Comments (0)

You might have already done so overseas, but here at home slapping your JFK or LAX bag tag onto your suitcase yourself is certainly the exception and not the norm. That might change soon enough if Alaska Airlines gets their way, as they’re the airline that’s leading the charge.

Recently over at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Alaska Airlines finished installation some of their first baggage tag printers. That means passengers are now free to go crazy and slap on their own stickers and bags tags—assuming they can be trusted. It sounds like they’re already hungry for more, as future airports are scheduled to receive similar options later this summer. However, for now it looks like you’ll have to be departing from SEA to play with the stickers.

Alaska Airlines and Turkish Airlines Lead This Week's New Route News

June 29, 2012 at 9:26 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· Alaska Airlines:
We can’t guarantee a fare war from Washington over to Maui, but with a couple of airlines planning service in the near future it’s definitely a possibility. Alaska Airlines is planning to send plenty of planes and people between Bellingham, Washington and Kahului, Hawaii starting at the beginning of November. It’s going to be just seasonal service, as the flights are scheduled to run four times per week through April 14. Alaska Airlines’ flights are set to start flying about a week before the competition from Allegiant Air begins. If you choose to go with Alaska Airlines be sure to book sooner than later, as right now they’re offering up introductory one-way fares starting from $179.

· Allegiant Air:
South Bend, Indiana is getting another affordable flight option thanks to Allegiant Air, as the carrier is looking to add a fifth nonstop flight to and from the city. This time it looks like Punta Gorda, Florida will be the latest option, as Allegiant adds to its route network. They’ve already been flying to spots in Florida as well as Las Vegas and Phoenix. Of course when flying with Allegiant you’ll need to be mindful of their tendency to tack on additional fees, charges, and other costly tidbits. However, with one-way flights starting at $95 it’s probably worth taking a chance with Allegiant.

Such a Tease. Alaska Airlines Will Get You Hooked with 15 Free Minutes of In-Flight WiFi

June 12, 2012 at 9:13 AM | by | Comments (0)

Oh Alaska Airlines, you’re such a tease!

The carrier is celebrating its in-flight WiFi awesomeness by offering some freebies, but be careful when you take them up on your offer—‘cause you’ll quickly be hooked. Unfortunately, not every Alaska Airlines flight offers WiFi, but there’s plenty of options where you can take some in-flight internet access for a spin and for free.

Emirates, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines and More Make New Routes

June 8, 2012 at 9:55 AM | by | Comments (0)

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· JetBlue:
The warmer weather means more than just thunderstorm delays and crowded terminals and planes, as it’s also time to initiate seasonal service. JetBlue has already allocated some planes out to Long Beach, California, as the warm weather flights up and over to Anchorage, Alaska have returned.

It’s a pretty long flight—considering that you’re still in the same country—but the free snacks and personal video screens should make it a little more enjoyable. Whether you’re looking to depart from the cruise terminal or finally take that bromantic fly fishing trip, we’re thinking that JetBlue will get you there on time and will keep you entertained.

· Emirates:
There’s no stopping Emirates when it comes to their expansion around the globe. This week they’re busy updating their route map with another new city pair, as it looks like the plan is to connect Dubai with Ho Chi Minh City.

The flights to Vietnam started up earlier this week, and this brings Emirates running total up to a 124 different destinations in 74 different countries. All the flying fun is done thanks to a little help from the carrier’s Airbus A330-200s, and there will be plenty of comfy options up front in business class and a little less comfort in the back with 251 economy class seats.

Time-Lapse Video: An Aztec Airplane for Alaska Airlines

June 5, 2012 at 12:55 PM | by | Comments (0)

You know we love us a good airplane livery, and it’s no secret that we’re also fond of a snazzy time-lapse video. Put them together and you’ve got our attention, so that’s why we’re sharing the latest and greatest paint job from the folks over at Alaska Airlines.

We’ve seen sports teams, animals, and everything else slapped onto the side of an airplane, and now there’s a college being celebrated up in the sky at 35,000-feet. Someone must be a big fan of the Aztecs of San Diego State University, because it’s now plastered all over the outside of one of the airline’s Bombardier Q400s. We must have missed the other ones, but this is like the ninth different college to get the airplane treatment over at Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.

Misbehaving Child on a Flight? Alaska Airlines Ain't Having That

June 4, 2012 at 5:53 PM | by | Comments (0)

As we have repeatedly confirmed and often mention, and with the exception of the "overweight passengers in seats" screaming match, there is absolutely nothing that gets travelers riled up like the "kids on airplanes" debate.

Of the many reasons we have an entire travel with children category, there's the plain fact that everyone has an opinion—and almost always a strong one—about the controversy. Either you have to do it and you don't understand why people won't make allowances for you and your children, or you loathe traveler parents and can't stand the little crotch flowers they drag along with them. There are enough people in the latter group that Malaysia Airlines has evaluated the market and started banning children from huge sections of their airplanes.

Coming Soon for Your Legs and Butt: Alaska Airlines' New Seats

May 21, 2012 at 9:36 AM | by | Comments (0)

We haven’t heard too much from Alaska Airlines lately. Of course there was that time they ditched the prayer cards and the mysteriously itchy uniforms, but now they’re making news for an actual improvement. The eskimo-faced carrier is looking forward to the arrival of some new seats.

Alaska Airlines fell hard for the presentation from the suits over at Recaro Aircraft Seating, as they’re going all in with one of the manufacturer’s latest designs. The updated features include a six-way adjustable headrest, as well as three inches of recline. The new seats will even feature like an inch more of legroom, so feel free to stretch out once aboard—at least just a little bit.

Alaska Airlines Will Again Reel in the Special 'Salmon-Thirty-Salmon' 737

May 18, 2012 at 10:11 AM | by | Comments (0)

A look at the plan for the new fish...

You know we’re suckers for anything to do with airplane liveries, and we also always get a kick out of travel stuff involving animals. So that’s why we couldn’t resist sharing an update regarding Alaska Airlines and their plans for the next generation of their “Salmon-Thirty-Salmon.”

The original fish-plane initially entered the hangar for the finned paint job back in 2005, but after a couple years of flying to here and there it was in need of an update. Unfortunately, it was repainted into the normal Alaska Airlines colors and the world lost this quirky airplane for the time being.

Alaska Airlines Flight Attendants are Sick of (and Sick by) Their New Uniforms

May 7, 2012 at 10:37 AM | by | Comments (0)

When flight attendants score some new uniforms—or some new shoes—we are usually all excited about it. However, this is unfortunately not the case with Alaska Airlines and the new shirts, pants, and skirts they’ve been passing out to those who work the aisles high in the sky.

The new uniforms have been kicking around since 2011, but ever since their release there have ben some interesting comments regarding the level of comfort they provide. Apparently flight attendants have been a little itchy, scratchy, and generally rash-y after receiving these new company issued clothes. The Association of Flight Attendants, which represents plenty of the airline’s crewmembers, is now speaking out as well, as they’re thinking that these new threads are responsible for hair loss and other not too great allergic reactions.
