What New Orleans is Planning to Do with $650 Million

Plenty of travelers head and to and through Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport each and every year, and that’s especially the case when events like the Super Bowl and Final Four take place in town. Airport officials realize that the place could use even more upgrades and improvements, so they’re thinking about throwing down $650 million to spruce things up.

The plans aren’t just for new restaurants and shops—the airport just got those—as this new plan calls from an entirely new terminal built on the north side of the existing airport.

What's to Love of All the New Stuff at Dallas' Love Field

If you’re heading to Dallas anytime soon you might want to consider the city’s other airport. Sure things are fine and dandy over at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, and they’ve got lots of flights to plenty of destinations; however, Dallas Love Field has something that DFW doesn’t—new airport smell.

The airport just finished a revamp and renovation, and parts of the new airport are now open to the flying public. In total there’s eleven new gates at the airport, as the place is ready to debut just part of its renovation. There was a sneak peek for airport employees and others eager to take a look, but now things are open for those holding tickets as well.

Wish You Were Here: Memphis Airport's BBQ-palooza

Step off the plane at Memphis International Airport and, while you're still in the jetbridge, before even entering the terminal proper, the tangy sweet smell of BBQ sauce assaults your olfactory. There's no escaping the scent; Memphis' airport is home to no fewer than three barbecue restaurants—two locations of Jim Neely's Interstate BBQ, and one Corky's BBQ.

Upon landing from our Delta flight in from Atlanta (another airport that smells of yummy eats), we made a bee-line for the Interstate BBQ and their BBQ pulled pork sandwich and then played the tourist with some browsing in the airport's dedicated Elvis souvenir shop. Oh, and what was playing over the airport's sound system? Elvis' greatest hits, naturally.

We’re always quick to point out a solid option for airport eats, but more times than not we’re focused on the food. This time we’re looking at more of the story behind the restaurant, but don’t worry, they’ve still got some good grub to grab on the go.

Homeboy Industries is a non-profit organization looking to help those down on their luck work their way back into the community. The place does its best to help keep former gang member out of jail and on the straight and narrow. They do all kinds of good as well as plenty of warm and fuzzy, but what we’re most interested in is their latest venture over at the airport.

Sure, we love all the speed and comfort of modern travel, but it didn't that way overnight. Every Thursday, we're going to take a look back at travel the way it used to be, whether that's decades or centuries ago. This is Throwback Thursday, travel edition.

Are you sitting down? No? You might want to, because we're about to do something crazy. We're going to wax nostalgic for the good ol' days of airport hotels, specifically the Holiday Inns of the 1960s.

Sure, Holiday Inn still exists and they've even gussied up their image and amenities in the last decade especially to appeal to modern travelers, both business and leisure, but there was something special about the midcentury playfulness of the 1960s Holiday Inn that makes us yearn to even spend just one night in a JFK Airport hotel. Shocking!

Why LAX Airport is Building a Team of Therapy Dogs

No matter how many times you’ve made your way through the airport security shuffle, the whole travel experience Is still a little bit stressful. That’s why we’re pretty excited to hear about Los Angeles International Airport’s plan to bring a little more relaxation to the airport. They’re not doing yoga within the terminal—at least not yet—but they are bringing some furry friends right into the airport.

Therapy dogs are now doing their thing in the boarding areas, near the baggage claim carrousels, and everywhere in between over at LAX. It’s part of a new program aimed to help people relax prior to takeoff or just after landing, and they’re calling it PUPs—Pets Unstressing Passengers.

What It's Like to Run on a Runway at New York's JFK Airport

Let's race! Running shoes? Check. Healthy breakfast? Check. Warm-up stretches? Check. A runway course at New York's busiest international airport? CHECK.

This past Sunday, April 14, nearly 1,000 runners and aviation enthusiasts resisted hitting the "Snooze" button and got their butts to JFK Airport for the 41st Annual JFK Runway Run. The 5K course actually closes a major runway to air traffic, while the rerouted aircraft continue landing and taking off like normal on other runways. No earplugs needed, but most runners had a camera in hand.

Registration was $25 in advance and $30 onsite. We were lazy and showed up at 7am for the 9am race to ensure we secured a last-minute spot. Come to find out that our worry was all for naught; anyone who showed up and paid was welcome to race.

The 963 participants were runners and walkers of all ages and ability levels, and even those in wheelchairs were welcome to have a pusher. We watched as one little girl, who couldn't have been older than 8, spent her time walking the runway and taking iPhone photos of planes. Very cute. Meanwhile, the serious runners were probably well into their lunches; the fastest times were just over 20 minutes while the slowest (ours) was 1 hour and 20 minutes. Yes, we proudly finished 963rd on account of all the aircraft distractions.

A Lion Air 737 Goes for an Accidental Swim in Bali (Crash Photos and Details)

Just before 5:10am EST this morning, it was reported that an aircraft had gone into the water off the runway at Bali's Airport at 15:10pm local time. That was a simple newsflash, but additional details have emerged in the minutes since, and here is what we know:*

· Update (12pm EST): It is now confirmed that the plane didn't overshoot the runway, but landed short of it. This would mean that the 737 landed too early (versus too late, with an overshoot) and thus hit the water just before the runway. The number of passengers has also been solidified; there were 101 passengers and 7 crew, all surviving.

· The aircraft, a Lion Air Boeing 737-800 (registration PK-LKS), was operating a flight from Bandung, Indonesia to Denpasar/Bali, Indonesia when it landed in the ocean.

· Both ends of the runway at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) are bordered by the ocean. The 737 was unable to stop before continuing off the edge and into the water on the runway's western end [See Update above]. The force of the landing caused the rear area of the fuselage to break, just behind the trailing edge of the wing.

New Airport Eats Arrive in Houston, Dallas and Boston

New restaurants seem to be popping up at airports across the country faster than we can keep track of them, so we took some time to check out some of the newest options. Here’s just a few of the latest establishments competing with Sbarro for your airport restaurant dollars:

Dallas Love Field

Southwest is the carrier that ‘LUVs’ to fly to and from the smaller airport down in Dallas, but that doesn’t mean that the airport isn’t a great place to relax between flights. New restaurants are all part of a new expansion at the airport, as October 2014 is when certain flight restrictions will become a thing of the past.

Whataburger—in its first airport appearance—brings burgers and fries into the terminal, but if you’re looking to sit down during your meal there’s always Cool River and Sky Canyon. National options include places like Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts, because you just need your coffee fix. However, if you’re looking for something local there’s Campisi’s Pizza, Cantina Laredo, and Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. Things opened up earlier this week, so swing by if you’re heading to or heading through.

SFO Airs Out the Archives for a Retrospective of United Uniforms

United just opened up the airline archive, as they’re looking to make room for some new stuff. They’ve got decades of uniforms that they’re looking to show off to the public, so they just sent a whole bunch of them over to San Francisco International Airport for a new display.

In total there are flight attendants uniforms from like the very first flights back in the 1930s through the current styles of today. Green capes, blue suits, and everything in between are now available to check out in person between April 8 and September 15. Unfortunately there isn’t a sneak peek of United’s new uniforms, as it sounds like those are still on backorder—ha.

You know that we love us some airports. From terminal design and ticket counters to restaurants and lounges—we’re all about it. That’s why we’ve been wasting a few minutes of our day checking out some awesome aerial airport photographs from Jeffrey Milstein.

The photographer’s series Flying illustrates the twists, turns, and everything else from high above the airport. These photographs are taken just high enough above the ground to get a great view of the scene, but some of the little details are just out of sight—no matter how hard we look for the baggage handlers down on the ground.

LAX Feels the Delta Love with $229 Million in Upgrades

Over the last few months we’ve seen several sneak peeks and first looks at what’s going on over at JFK Airport and Delta’s plan for the renovation at Terminal 4. From the SkyDeck to the SkyClub and everything in between the place looks like it’s going to be a hit when it debuts later this year, and that’s especially the case since what it’s replacing was so terrible—to put things lightly.

Anyway now that the bulldozers and construction crews are getting ready to pack up over in New York, it looks like they’re already getting their next assignment. Apparently Delta now has its eyes on mixing things up over at LAX, as they’re about to start spiffing things up as part of a $229 million upgrade and improvement.
