Airport WiFi: More Free Access

Our list of airports with free WiFi just keeps growing, thanks to our army of 'net savvy travel tipsters. Today we can update our airport WiFi map with two more airports.

Birmingham International Airport in Alabama has a free signal throughout its terminal building, and if you need a hard-wired connection, the business center between Concourses B and C has you covered.

Pensacola Regional Airport also offers free internet, on a system installed by a local computer science grad student. (Designed by a computer nerd? You know that's gonna be a reliable network.) Arcata-Eureka Airport, a small airfield in California, also has free internet, says our tipster Patrick.

Airport WiFi: Free Signals from Boise to JFK

We put out the word for your airport WiFi tips, and you haven't disappointed. Our guide to airports that offer up free 'net access is growing almost every day.

Today's round of updates includes Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International, a bigger airport than we're used to seeing on our map. We've also added some smaller airfields, including Albuquerque and Boise (pictured).

Also, we heard about the free WiFi at Delta's Crown Room club at JFK's Terminal 3. Park yourself near Gate 6, and you should be able to pick up the signal leaking out of the VIP lounge for free.

Airport WiFi: Smaller Airports, For The Win

Thanks to our well-traveled tipsters, we have even more airport WiFi updates for our Airport WiFi Map. And as we've come to expect, it's the smaller airports in the US that come through with the free wireless internet.

Tipster Peter fills us in on three airports in the Pacific Northwest with WiFi. Roberts Field in Central Oregon has it, as does Tri-Cities Regional Airport in Pasco, WA. Also providing free 'net access is Walla Walla Regional Airport.

Another tipster writes in with news from east of the Mississippi. Turns out Fort Wayne International Airport has had WiFi for a few years now. Before you guffaw that no one would use the signal in small airports like these, check out Connected Ventures (CollegeHumor, et al.) founder Zach Klein online at FWA. Wait, two laptops? True road warrior style.

Airport WiFi: No More Singin' The Blues in New Orleans

The airport WiFi news around here just won't stop--and we love it. Today, kudos go out to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International, which has seriously stepped up its wireless game with new, airport-wide service.

Previously, there were a couple hotspots in the airport available for a fee, and the only free access was outside the secure area. With the new $400,000 system, you can get online anywhere except at the ticket counters and in the baggage claim area.

MSY may decide to charge for internet access in the future, but for now the network is wide open. You'll find the best signal strength in the seating area across from the House of Blues and Creole Kitchen stores, near Sonic and Popeye's restaurants and in Concourse D.

Our Airport WiFi Guide focuses on US airports not because we don't love flying elsewhere but because that's where we spend most of our time. Fortunately, our tipsters are a well-traveled bunch, who go to literary festivals and other swanky jet-set events.

After stopping in Vancouver International, Diane wrote in with great things to say:

Passing through YVR last week on our way home from the Surrey International Writers' Conference, we found that WiFi is free in the airside international terminal. This has to be one of the prettiest places to websurf in any airport I know. Sit in the restaurant across from the splashing of the salmon stream (!), have a glass of cool white wine and get caught up on those emails.

We'd be happy to the next chance we get. Until then, we'll add YVR to our Airport WiFi Map.

Airport WiFi: More US Airports with Free Connections

The love for smaller airports and their free WiFi just keeps growing. Since we posted our guide to the best US airports for WiFi, the tips have been rolling in. We're adding three more airports to our map today.

Greater Peoria Regional Airport has free internet as well as free parking. Before you try to log on, though, make sure you snag the WEP password. (We have it listed on our map.) Chicago Rockford International Airport also has no-strings-attached wireless. RFD has free parking, too.

And Jaunted member tgreale fills us in on the situation in Alaska:

The main (south) terminal at Ted Stevens airport in Anchorage has free Wi-Fi, but I've had trouble connecting at some of the gates down the C concourse.

Airport WiFi: Get Online in Ithaca

We launched our Airport WiFi Map yesterday, with a report on the state of wireless at America's airfields. And word is already rolling in about more airports with free signals.

A tipster tells us that Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport has hassle-free (and just plain free) WiFi. The airport recently expanded coverage, meaning you can now get online from anywhere in the terminal.

We're always excited to hear about new places with WiFi, and we're not surprised it's a smaller airport that's making news. Free internet undoubtedly makes a destination more appealing, which for smaller airports translates into more traffic from people like us. That's why the little guys are leading the way when it comes to wireless in the U.S.

Best US Airports for WiFi

In this summer-turned-fall of airport delays, one thing can help turn a trip from maddening hassle to sufferable necessity: Airport WiFi. If you're going to get stuck in a terminal far from home and far from where you're going, at least you can get online and get some work done (or update your Facebook page). At least, that's our dream.

Some airports claim free WiFi, but it is super tempermental and only exists in one terminal (JFK we are looking at you), some airports hang "We Have WiFi" banners throughout the terminals but in reality they offer a couple hours of access for $9.99, and worst of all, if you are hoping to gain coveted access to a sparse power outlet, they make you sit your ass on the, cold, hard, unforgiving airport floor while you access the web.

Lots of airports still don't even offer WiFi to travelers passing through, and we can't figure out why. In our view, it's another utility that should be provided for free, just like bathrooms and A/C. And more importantly, we find that an airport with reliable, free WiFi gets us planning our trip around such signal-strong airports.

But there's hope. Some large US airports are leading the way, while the real innovation is going on at the country's small airfields. Maybe it's due to less red tape, or maybe they just want to get noticed, but regional and less-used airports usually have the best WiFi.
