Hanging Out at Singapore's Changi Airport: Terminal 3's SilverKris Lounge

Where: Singapore-Changi International, Singapore
February 10, 2012 at 6:08 PM | by | Comments (0)

There's a reason Singapore-Changi International Airport consistently wins awards; it's because the place is ah-may-zing. After spending much time at the three main terminals earlier this week, we're sharing with you our favorite, can't-miss bits of this massive travel hub.

Today: The Singapore Airlines SilverKris lounge in Terminal 3

Champagne at the ready, showers for the sweaty, hot food for light meals and stylish chairs for resting our heels. These are a few of our favorite things...when it comes to airline lounges and, of course, the Terminal 3 Singapore Airlines SilverKris lounge at Changi Airport has it all in spades. In fact, they even have some pretty tasty chicken tikka and if that doesn't prove the quality of the place, then we don't know what does.

Where to Smoke, Drink and WiFi When Flying Out of Nassau

Where: Nassau, Bahamas
February 9, 2012 at 1:45 PM | by | Comments (0)

Work on the new international arrivals hall at Nassau's Lynden Pindling International Airport is still underway—but the departures areas are looking pretty nice and, as far as we could tell when flying out on Monday, functioning faster than they did in the past.

One improvement you may be interested in if you like a cigar or a stiff drink before waving goodbye to the Bahamas is the Graycliff Divan Airport Lounge.

This spinoff of the Graycliff hotel, restaurant and cigar company opened its double lounge—one smoking, one non-smoking—last spring opposte Gate C41 in the US departures terminal.

You may not realize it's an airport lounge at first because it looks like a tschotske-filled boutique—and in fact it is. To register for access to your lounge of choice, you must enter through the gift shop.

February 8, 2012 at 12:20 PM | by | Comments (0)

When some sweet airline news comes down the pipeline, we get a little shiver of a thrill. The latest carrier to give us those goosebumps of expectation is Virgin Atlantic, as they've got a slew of updates hitting the sky later this year:

· New Upper Class seats, coming Spring 2012.

100 million GBP. That's how much Virgin Atlantic is laying out to get you all laid out in "enhanced" Upper Class seats and enjoying all their spring 2012 upgrades. While we don't yet know specifics like seat width, gadgets or even the design, we do know that the seats will debut on the airline's London-New York route in just a few months. Following this, VS planes will get the Upper Class refresh throughout the world, over a period of three years. Stay tuned, since details can't be kept secret much longer.

Inside Dragonair's G16 Lounge at Hong Kong International

February 6, 2012 at 4:20 PM | by | Comment (1)

We've given you a glorious tour of the unbelievable Cathay Pacific airport lounges at the Hong Kong International Airport from The Wing to The Pier but today we're taking you inside the less-exciting G16 Lounge of Dragonair, a regional carrier of Cathay Pacific.

Located at, as its name indicates, Gate 16, the lounge overlooks the gate area up on high—sort of like a Loft Lounge. The seating areas are very traditional (no Solus pods here) although plentiful. The self-service refreshment counter features plenty of drinks and finger snacks (both Western and Asian, alcoholic and non) as well as coffee and cappuccino.

There's also a kitchen with an on-site chef to prepare Hong Kong specialties like fishball noodles. (We were hoping for some Dan dan noodles like the ones we ate at SFO but alas, we were out of luck.)

Inside the Oasis Lounge at New York-JFK's Terminal 4

Where: JFK International Airport [map], New York , NY, United States
February 6, 2012 at 10:24 AM | by | Comments (2)

So you're flying Business Class on the Singapore Airlines A380? Or maybe you're heading out in business class on any of the other airlines that call JFK Terminal 4 home, among them Aer Lingus. After checking in for your flight but before heading through security, you'll be directed to chill in the Oasis Lounge on the mezzanine above the main hubbub of the terminal.

On your walk over to the lounge, you'll see the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse (don't get too jealous; it's going to be replaced by an even better Clubhouse soon) and you'll pass near the four prayer rooms of JFK. That's about the end of the excitement, however, as the Oasis Lounge is pretty standard lounge fare with the exception of free booze and stellar views of the tarmac.

Two Minutes of Time-Lapse from a Hall at Houston Airport

Where: JFK International Airport [map], New York, NY, United States
January 30, 2012 at 10:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

While we freely admit that when it comes to airport time-lapse videos, ones of airplanes zipping around that tarmac are definitely our favorite. Recently, however, YouTube user Ross Johnson, aka Tumbles94—whose tilt-shift videos from Frankfurt Airport featured before—turned his camera inside an airport to capture the bustle of a busy terminal.

Travelers toting carry-ons and last-minute purchases in plastic bags littler the scene. Ross had some nerve sitting in the middle of a busy hall at Houston-George Bush International's Terminal E for 30 minutes, capturing all this.

We love it for what it reveals about the average traveler on (mostly) Continental Airlines flights from IAH: the vast majority are solo travelers, with duos here and there. Many men wear "dad jeans," but few ever stop and look lost. Cameos from the golf cart!

Enjoy. (And thanks again to Ross Johnson for spending his layovers taking these vids!)

Inside Paribatra, the Helicopter Departure Lounge at The Peninsula Hotel Bangkok

January 18, 2012 at 10:21 AM | by | Comments (0)

The 34th floor may not sound like so high, but in an area with no other skyscrapers to challenge it, the Peninsula Hotel Bangkok's Helicopter departure lounge might as well be in heaven. Named "Paribatra" after HRH Prince Paripatra Sukhumbhand, Prince of Nakorn Sawan, the Pen's helilounge is one of those sweet secret spaces often heard of a city, but rarely visited. The only ways to access this one? You must either book a helicopter flight transfer for a grand chunk of change or rent out the place for a private function with others who appreciate aviation history; in other words, it's hardcore.

We managed to sneak around the helilounge recently, and though the helipads remained out of reach (for now), we did sink our heels into the rich carpeting, get up close with jet engine parts as wall decoration, and drink in what may be the best view in Bangkok, of Bangkok. You see, The Peninsula sits on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River, opposite like 90% of the central district. Therefore, The Peninsula is essentially gazing over at the metropolis, with the helilounge winking.

Inside the New Cathay Pacific Lounge at San Francisco International Airport

Where: San Francisco International [map], San Francisco, CA, United States
December 21, 2011 at 9:35 AM | by | Comments (0)

Finally. Finally! Cathay Pacific has finally opened a lounge of their very own on US soil, at San Francisco International's International Terminal. This is huge news for frequent flyers on Cathay to Hong Kong, but even for design buffs as the lounge includes the specially designed Solus Chair, first introduced at their Cabin lounge at HKG.

Because Cathay actually enjoys making their lounges somewhere you want to hang out, we'd recommend getting there early enough before your flight to relax in the fresh space. It opens up four hours before the first Cathay departure. All in all there's several seating areas, three shower rooms, seven private workstations (with printer), a snack center and noodle bar. Plus free WiFi of course.

Gift These: Annual Memberships to Your Favorite Frequent Flyer's Airline Lounge

December 13, 2011 at 9:51 AM | by | Comment (1)

What's shaking at the Delta SkyClub...

Frequent flyers in your family don’t want one of those inflatable neck pillows, and they especially don’t want anything from the SkyMall catalog—well, probably. However, what they do want is access to an airline lounge, so they can think of you each and every time they escape the madness of the terminal in favor of a comfortable chair and an adult beverage. Sure, there's a significant annual admission to what lies beyond the automatic doors, so maybe you should just get it for yourself instead of asking Santa.

Here's a quck rundown of the pricing and features of the four major US carriers' lounges, just in case you're feeling extra generous:

· American Airlines Admirals Club Lounge
If you’re a big fan of American Airlines and their shiny planes, there’s no better lounge to access. Membership gets you free beverages—both boozy and not—as well as some snacks, WiFi, and access to computers and printers. There’s 40 clubs across the airline’s network with the majority in the nifty fifty. Getting in will set you back a cool $500 for the year, but if you just want to test things out before committing it’s $50 per visit. That way you can check out their additional food offerings, as select clubs have a little bit of a restaurant thing going on.

Over Two Minutes of Time-Lapse, Tilt-Shift Video Fun at Frankfurt Airport

Where: Frankfurt International Airport, Frankfurt, Germany
December 9, 2011 at 11:18 AM | by | Comments (0)

As if you needed any more reasons to lust over airline lounges, we must say that some of the best photos and videos come from them. Proving this yet again is YouTube user Ross Johnson, aka Tumbles94, who emailed us to say that he's again used his perch in one of the Lufthansa lounges at Frankfurt International to capture mesmerizing tilt-shift, time-lapsed videos.

For this third installment—see the first two here and here—Ross spends a good long time shooting the 747s and smaller jets that scuttle around the tarmac, plus the drones of the support vehicles.

Note the changing light as the day progresses, and the shadows the clouds cast. Riveting stuff, and many thanks to Ross for continuing to produce these.

Buy This: Lifetime Access to Virgin Australia Lounges

Where: Australia
December 5, 2011 at 9:45 AM | by | Comments (0)

From time to time, we come across airline offers that truly intrigue and shock, and last week Virgin Australia's announcement was no different. Not 6 months from a complete company re-brand, Sir Richard Branson's Australian brainchild is now offering customers lifetime access to any of their lounges.

What do you need to do to have this distinction? Only $9,750 AUD! If you are over 60 years old, no worries, an obvious discount is in order and the price drops to $6,750 AUD.

For those willing to part with this type of cash, access is granted to all Virgin Australia Lounges across the country and reciprocal access to Air New Zealand Koru Lounges. When in Sydney, the prestigious membership allows curb-side check-in and a specially dedicated entrance to the terminal and lounge. Virgin will also throw in some culinary products from their celebrity chef, Luke Mangan, and skin care products from Grown.

Inside the US Airways Club at Washington DC's Reagan National Airport

November 29, 2011 at 4:00 PM | by | Comments (2)

Have you ever entered a fancier doctor's office and been directed to "take a seat," and then looked around and thought, "hey, this isn't all that bad?" Of course you have; an experience like this is common enough, but what isn't so common is finding that exact same feel in an airline lounge.

Every so often we fly through Washington DC's Reagan National Airport and, this last time, we actually had enough of a layover to warrant spending some time drinking the complimentary coffee and soaking up the tarmac views from the US Airways Club in Concourse C.

Getting there: The lounge is after security, but up an elevator before you head down the concourse to the gates. A simple silver plaque lets you know this, and upstairs you'll hit the regular reception desk. It's here however that you may encounter problems if you're a Star Alliance Gold member, but not with US Airways. The receptionist at first wouldn't allow us entry, because we weren't traveling on an international ticket.

WRONG. Star Alliance Gold members (*of airlines other than Continental, United and US Airways) are allowed up there, so long as they're traveling on a Star Alliance flight in any class that day. Explaining the right to enter a lounge is not only embarrassing but it also immediately sours our impression of the place.
