You might remember Indonesian low cost carrier AdamAir as that one that bends planes and even loses them. Earlier in the year, AdamAir was under threat of closure from the Indonesian government unless it improved its safety record.
In the second half of 2007, four Indonesian airlines were shut down and five grounded over safety problems, but AdamAir wasn't one of them. In fact, the government upgraded its ranking to the next level of safety. So we're hoping the days of crashes and near-misses are over.
If you want to book a cheap flight with AdamAir around Indonesia (and to Singapore too), the airline's website offers plenty of cheap deals. We were quite enthused by the AdamAir Live Help button, and we clicked and entered our nickname, ready to talk to an AdamAir rep. After a couple of minutes, unfortunately, we got taken to a virtual answering machine: a pop-up box telling us everyone was busy, where we could leave a message and wait for an email back. Not a big deal, as long as the pilots are really there when we need them.

As if it wasn't bad enough that they named their airline AdamAir, and on top of that have a habit of losing their airplanes (and unfortunately sometimes their occupants), now Indonesia's el-cheapo AdamAir have hit the headlines after they bent one of their aircraft.
That's right, they bent a plane. It was landing in Surabaya about a week ago and, according to officials, "made a hard landing but did not crash." This landing was so hard that the Boeing 737-300 was bent in the middle, with its tail hanging closer to the ground than normal. Parts of the plane were also cracked, and heavy rain got lumbered with most of the blame. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, but we still don't want to be flying around in bendable aircraft.

Yesterday, an
AdamAir plane lost contact with air traffic control while in flight over Indonesia--the second time in less than a year that such an incident occurred for the airline. While last year's affected plane ultimately landed safely, the news today is much worse: the plane has crashed, though the wreckage has yet to be located. More tragic still is the fact that reports were released saying that the plane
had been found, along with some survivors. That is not true, and no one's sure how the mix-up occurred.
There is some chatter on the net regarding the condition of AdamAir's fleet, which is made up of heavily-used, aging hand-me-downs, not uncommon for a startup LCC. One post on
FlyerTalk alerted to a
discussion on a pilot's message board about substandard maintenance procedures. It's too early to come to conclusions about the flight's problems, but if you're concerned about the age of the next plane you'll be flying, visit
AirFleets.net for more information.
