Why One Airline is Adding Crickets to the In-Flight Menu

There is no such thing as too many options when it comes to in-flight dining, snacking, and drinking. Thankfully JetBlue knows we’re suckers for a good in-flight snack, and that’s why we’re eager to try out their latest offering—even if it’s a little out of the ordinary.

Beginning in 2015, JetBlue will be handing out some unique snack bars featuring cricket as an ingredient. To be specific, they will be protein bars in flavors like blueberry vanilla and peanut butter and jelly, and one of the main components will be cricket flour—we guess that means ground up cricket carcasses.

Pricing and other details haven’t been rolled out as of yet, but we do know it’s part of a collaboration between the folks at JetBlue and AccelFoods' start-up Exo.

Skip 'Beef or Chicken' and Pick a Picnic on Flights from London-Heathrow

Making the "beef or chicken?" choice on is hardly a highlight of the trip. But could we tempt you to get a little more excited over Gordon Ramsay's roasted Hereford rump of beef with green salad and mustard or perhaps slow spit-roasted chicken with fries, salad, bread sauce and roasting juices from Heston Blumenthal? Yeah, we thought so.

London-Heathrow likes to push the envelop when it comes to innovation and has a great idea for doing away with the typical in-flight fare. The airport will deliver full menu items from any one of the terminal's 118 restaurants right to your gate, all wrapped up in a cool bag for chilled items, or a thermal bag for hot items. Each meal is completely prepared and ready to be noshed at any time after take-off.

What's Arriving on JetBlue's New A321s: An Economy Class of Awesome

What's arriving with JetBlue's A321s:

1. The "Mint" premium seats
2. "Mint" eats & treats
3. Upgrades to everything else

All this talk about Mint and A321s is exciting, for sure, but adding fancy new premium seats on a new airplane isn't going to distract JetBlue from their bread and butter: Economy Class.

JetBlue has, from their very beginning some thirteen years ago, touted their egalitarian approach to air travel. Everyone gets a leather seat; everyone enjoys free snacks and beverages; everyone can watch live, DirecTV channels on seatback screens; and everyone has a chance at low airfares. This isn't going away with the arrival of A321s into JetBlue's fleet, but being improved. Even better? The improvements are very noticeable; this is not a case of, "oh, we added some nice new accent piping to the headrest" (though there's that, too).

You've already seen the new "Mint" seats, but what about all the goodies that come with a premium in-flight experience and $599 one-way? Since Mint won't fly until June 15, 2014, JetBlue has plenty of time to refine the extras. Still, it's obvious they're pretty excited and want travelers to be as well, so yesterday they gave a glimpse of a few goodies they're working on for including with Mint.

A few months ago, we reviewed our experience on Vietnam Airlines international business class service. While we were left pleasantly surprised, not to mention utterly and completely stuffed with delicious food, we overlooked one quirk of the entire experience.

Our flight was an overnight from Ho Chi Minh City to Melbourne that featured two meal services, the first of which was a proper dinner service with cocktails and petit-fours. The second was breakfast right before landing on the red-eye.

Surprisingly Yummy Airline Meals: Korean Bibimbap on American Airlines

We have all had a terrible meal on a flight before. In fact, we have shown you some of the sadder trays slid in front of us. With this new series of amazing airline meals, we can revel in the airline culinary delights and give kudos to the airlines that got it right.

16 hours in the air is nothing to take lightly. That's three mealtimes, plus several naps, plus a movie or two and some general spacing-out-while-staring-at-clouds time. Thus, when it came to our nonstop in Business Class from Dallas/Ft. Worth to Seoul, South Korea yesterday on American Airlines, we knew we had plenty time to enjoy filling up on food.

AA 27 was actually the very first flight by AA to Seoul, a momentous occasion on which we'll go into deeper depth next week. Still, because it was an inaugural to South Korea, it would be the first time American has offered the Korean dish of Bibimbap on a flight. How could we pass it up?

While our seatmate tucked into his chicken order, the flight attendant presented us with a printed "How To" sheet on properly mixing the ingredients together, as bibimbap is actually rice with a plethora of colorful additions (carrot, zucchini, cucumber, shiitake, spinach, egg, tender beef bulgogi and pepper paste to taste). Even though this was an airline meal, presentation and quantity didn't suffer in the least.

Flight Review: Under $100 on Air Asia from Thailand to Cambodia

In all truthfulness, low-cost airlines get a bad rap for being more bottom-line conscious than customer focused, but on a recent flight from Thailand to Cambodia, we wanted to truly see for ourselves if Air Asia was as bad as the reputation of other LCCs would have us believe.

Earlier this week, we showed you how Bangkok's Don Mueang (DMK) is primarily used by Air Asia and other budget-carriers, so after wandering around the nearly vacant terminal, we headed downstairs to hop on a bus that took us to our bird.

Flight Review: Onboard Vietnam Airlines to Ho Chi Minh City

As you can probably tell from our slew of stories on Ho Chi Minh City, we recently traveled to Vietnam. One of the many ways to fly into the country, and the way in which we arrived, is via the green-blue hued planes of the national airline, Vietnam Airlines. Our route had us hopping on at Melbourne to fly nonstop to Ho Chi Minh City and we booked Business Class for a vacation treat.

At first, we considered using the 8.5-hour flight to relax and perhaps nap before what would be a two-week adventure in Southeast Asia, but the airline had a better idea; the flight crew fed us until we were stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey.

How British Airways Turned Their Tea from Swill to Swell

Just as Italians love their carbohydrates and Americans their right to bear arms, Great Britons adore their tea. Not that you’d have realized from the brew served on British Airways until recently; it was just as undrinkable as tea on any other airline.

Being the UK flag carrier, BA decided last year that its shoddy tea situation simply wasn’t good enough. And so, in a process that’s lasted nearly a year, they commissioned posh tea brand Twinings to make a new blend, especially for their planes. After much leaf-tinkering and several test flights (long and shorthaul), the blend is now arrived, and is being served everywhere in the plane (yes, even Economy).

You’d think there wasn’t much to it, but a couple of months back, BA invited us on its final test flight (between New York and London, natch) to sample the contenders. And it was there, as Twinings’ senior buyer Mike Wright talked us through what he was looking for in the teas, that we realized tea, especially in the air, is a really complicated thing.

Is This the First Digital Image of a North Korean In-Flight Meal?

This is an airline meal. It's not just any airline meal, however; it's a piece of digital imaging and travel history and it was only created this morning.

David Guttenfelder, Chief Photographer in Asia for the AP, is currently in North Korea on assignment and taking advantage of the newly un-banned 3G network to share some Instagrams from daily life, like this seemingly banal image of his in-flight meal on North Korea's state airline, Air Koryo.

We say "seemingly banal," because it's in fact incredibly interesting. For one, has there ever been another digital image like this, instantly shared from an Air Koryo plane, location-tagged to Pyongyang's Airport? The answer is "kind of," as Guttenfelder also posted another of his Air Koryo meals (view the meal & view the plane) 29 weeks ago, but done after the fact and without a geotag.

In-flight Fast Food: Japan Airlines Adds a 'Teriyaki Egg Burger' to the Menu

It seems like just the other day we were talking about Colonel Sanders and his finger lickin' good adventure at 35,000-feet. As a quick reminder, the fast food giant KFC sent some of their famous fried chicken up into the friendly skies, as they partnered with Japan Airlines to add a little fried fun into their in-flight menu. Now it looks like the carrier is reaching out into the fast food community once again, as they’re looking to serve up some mile high burgers.

This isn’t the first time, either; it's actually the third time Japan Airlines is collaborating with MOS Burger. It’s just the latest installment in the carrier’s Air Series in-flight meal service, and now all you need is to smuggle on a side of fries.

Another Airline Jumps Onboard the Pre-Ordered Premium Meals Bandwagon

Now that Malaysia Airlines has become a full-fledged member in the Oneworld Alliance, they've enhanced the experience for hungry premium passengers by letting more people in on the Chef-On-Call service.

Originally only for Platinum level frequent-flyers in their Enrich program traveling in first and business class, the perk was eventually offered to all who could pay the big bucks for a first class seat. Now, the folks in the business class cabin get to pick their meal before flying. Unlike the chef programs of a few other airlines, however, there's not actually a chef on-board.
