Flight Review: Onboard Vietnam Airlines to Ho Chi Minh City

Where: Vietnam
May 3, 2013 at 9:59 AM | by | Comment (1)

As you can probably tell from our slew of stories on Ho Chi Minh City, we recently traveled to Vietnam. One of the many ways to fly into the country, and the way in which we arrived, is via the green-blue hued planes of the national airline, Vietnam Airlines. Our route had us hopping on at Melbourne to fly nonstop to Ho Chi Minh City and we booked Business Class for a vacation treat.

At first, we considered using the 8.5-hour flight to relax and perhaps nap before what would be a two-week adventure in Southeast Asia, but the airline had a better idea; the flight crew fed us until we were stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey.

Here's a breakdown of what we loved and what we could have done without:

Have a Sneak Peek Inside Fiji Airways' Fancy New Flying Machine

Where: Fiji
March 21, 2013 at 11:15 AM | by | Comments (0)

It's not only American Airlines that's got a shiny new toy to play with this month. Nope—wave goodbye to Air Pacific and say "Bula" to Fiji Airways, as this week they officially received the keys to their newest baby: a brand spanking new Airbus A330. Let's have a look!

Yesterday we showed you the slick paint job on the outside of the newest ride for Air Pacific's rebranded airline, Fiji Airways. Today we take you inside, to check out the cabin, sit in the seats and otherwise give you a peek at what passengers can expect on their way to paradise.

It's worth mentioning again, the entire design for the aircraft is cool. We mean, like, super cool. Not only have they gone back to the original name of the airline, but the livery showcases Fiji through the artwork of their traditional designs, called Masi. The graphics and colors are only the start, as passengers are going to get a taste of the islands inside as well.

Why Fiji Airways Decided to Tattoo Their Newest Airplane

It's not only American Airlines that's got a shiny new toy to play with this month. Nope—wave goodbye to Air Pacific and say "Bula" to Fiji Airways, as this week they officially received the keys to their newest baby: a brand spanking new Airbus A330. Let's have a look!

PAR-TAY! It's hot, it's humid, and there's much to celebrate in Fiji this week. This arrival of their first A330 is not only a milestone for the airline, but it's the first physical peek at the hip look of the new Fiji Airways brand. Fun fact: Fiji Airways is the original name of the airline; they only became Air Pacific in 1971 and it's about time to switch things up.

What's more is that the new colors and Fiji Airways name is a return to the cultural heritage of the islands; gone is the rainbow tail that looks like someone drew it in Microsoft Paint, and now we see an intricate pattern taken straight from traditional Fijian Masi tribal designs and tattoos. It's a pount of national pride, this airline, so Fijians turned out en masse to greet the plane at Nadi International Airport yesterday, with a welcome ceremony and some traditional kava drinking.

Finnair Flashes Their Frosty Blue New Business Class

Where: Finland
February 21, 2013 at 12:19 PM | by | Comments (0)

Another week, another new business class seat. This time, it's Finnair's turn to dazzle passengers with a fully horizontal comfy chair. Pair this new seat with their Marimekko design and revamped premium menus and things are a-changing at Finnair.

So the seats aren't exactly new since a few of them already sport some butt-prints on three of the carrier's Airbus 330s. Eventually they will be added to the entire fleet of long-haul planes —A340 and, eventually, A350—to make a consistent product for passengers. And, just like many other European business class upgrades, this one comes with aisle access for (almost) everyone.

Why You Should Care About Qantas' New Ride

Where: Australia
November 30, 2012 at 11:36 AM | by | Comments (0)

Last weekend, when we were waking up from a food coma or watching one too many football games, Qantas got the keys to a brand-spanking new aircraft. The A330s will be replacing some aging 767s to take passengers from coast to coast in comfort, but they'll also ease pilot frustration in the cockpit.

The Red Roo plans to implement the widebody services on all weekday flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Perth. All passengers will be able spend the approximately 4-hour flight immersed in their own person TV entertainment system.

Flying Garuda Indonesia's Executive Class Actually Has...Class

April 27, 2012 at 3:32 PM | by | Comments (0)

Since an important part of traveling includes how you get there, it's always nice to sit up front in an airplane. While it makes more sense to experience first or business class on long-haul flights, doing so requires a lot more digging into pockets than most people can manage. The most economical way to fly in the premium cabin is to use miles for an upgrade.

We recently flew an airline that isn't part of our favorite airline alliance (yet). This means no opportunity to use those frequent flyer miles to stretch our legs. While planning a Bali trip, we needed to fly to Denpasar/Bali from Jakarta, and found one of our options to be Garuda Indonesia. Knowing little about them beyond that they're the national airline, we were curious.

Virgin Atlantic's Revamped Upper Class Bar is Crystal-Covered and Pretty Kinky

April 23, 2012 at 4:59 PM | by | Comments (0)

Look at the image above. Now scroll down and look at the image at the very bottom. Now glance back and forth and we dare you to tell us that the new, improved onboard Upper Class bars on Virgin Atlantic aren't crazy awesomer. Yeah, we said "awesomer." Things like this call for words like that.

Let's handle all this goodness bit by bit: yes, Virgin Atlantic has a bar onboard each of their planes. They're only for Upper Class passengers, however, but all the drinks are complimentary and a bartender will shake that Vesper Martini no problem. Yes, the revampment of Upper Class means the bar has been overhauled and now it looks like something torn from a Starship Enterprise-themed kink club or Tron's cut scenes, and we're more than cool with that.

Oh, and there will be Swarovski crystals. *cue the Marvin Gaye*

April 23, 2012 at 3:20 PM | by | Comments (0)

Hold up a moment while we hyperventilate. Virgin Atlantic just announced the details (and photos!) of their revamped Upper Class.

It feels like we've been waiting forever for the news—any news— on the new seats, but it's actually only been since February that Virgin teased that the Upper Class was about to get a spruce-up. And they've managed to keep it all top secret...until now.

Smell That? Qantas Begins Burning Biofuel on a Regular Route

Where: Australia
March 29, 2012 at 8:34 AM | by | Comments (0)

Earlier this week, we talked about Porter Airline's using alternative fuel to actually fly some passengers around. Well there's some more very exciting news for Mother Earth and the impact of all of these planes criss-crossing the globe. The Aussies down under at Qantas can now add themselves to the growing list of airlines either experimenting with or using a type of biofuel on scheduled passenger service.

The Flying Kangaroo has announced that, starting next week, flights between Sydney and Adelaide will have a smaller carbon footprint. The fuel, a blend of cooking oils, is the same stuff that filled the tanks of Lufthansa's biofuel aircraft. Test flights will be making history in Australia with an Airbus A330.

Virgin Atlantic Flight Attendants to Strut the Aisles in New Red Shoes

April 4, 2011 at 9:55 AM | by | Comments (0)

When you think of flight attendant shoes, you don't exactly think sexy, do you? FAs are on their feet more than we can even imagine, trucking their luggage through airport after airport, on moving walkway after moving walkways and up and down airplane aisles for hours on end. Somehow, through most of this, the women manage to wear their heels.

Virgin Atlantic, whose flight attendants are easily spotted in airport thanks to their sharp red uniforms, are switching it up. The uniform by John Rocha, first introduced almost 10 years ago, is swapping the black shoes for a sexier red patent. The reason? Apparently their new ad campaign and commercial, which features red shoes on the FAs, has been so successful that now the public expects the higher level of glam.

Of course this will freshen up the uniform until they can get new ones, a change expected to occur in three years. Mark it on your calendars.
