Next Stop for the 787 Dreamliner World Tour: Asia and a Public Airshow

January 31, 2012 at 10:13 AM | by | Comments (0)

If you still haven’t had the opportunity to sneak a peek of the Boeing 787, there’s still plenty of time to check it out as the Dreamliner World Tour continues to roll fly on. The plane has made stops in the United States and Europe—Ireland seemed to love it—and now it's heading to Asia to show off the latest and greatest in airplane technology.

The 787 will be filling up its tanks with plenty of airplane gas, as it heads off to Bangkok between February 9 and 11 to show off all its goodies to the suits over at Thai Airways. After that the plane will head to Singapore to meet and greet with Singapore Airlines, but it also will stick around a little bit longer...

The Boeing 787 Dream Tour Chugs Along As It Heads Back Home For a Visit

January 17, 2012 at 8:58 AM | by | Comments (0)

It wasn’t too long ago that the Boeing 787 took off on its world tour, and now it’s already time to welcome it back home. After checking out spots in Asia and Africa the plane is scheduled to head back to North America, but not before swinging through Ireland to grab a pint and check out the scenery.

The plane won’t be visiting major cities or transportation hubs in the United States, as most of its stops on Segment 2 of the Dream Tour have to do with paying a visit to engineers and designers. The 787 will say hello to workers and employees in Wichita, Kansas as well as Huntsville, Alabama. They’ve even got a stop scheduled for Rockford, Illinois to say hello to the men and women at Hamilton Sundstrand who designed and distributed like nine different systems for the next generation aircraft.

Transaero Busts Out an Oversized Check as They've Got 787s on Order

January 4, 2012 at 9:23 AM | by | Comments (0)

We knew that Russian airline Transaero was looking to order—and pack the back—some Airbus A380s, but now it seems that their attention has turned to another type of aircraft. If you were dreaming of a long-haul flight to Moscow aboard the big bird, there’s no need to worry as the planes are still on order. However, they are looking to add another type of brandy new airplane to their fleet.

Officials at Boeing and Transaero have completed their business lunch and a deal has been made, as it sounds like the airline is looking to place an order for four Boeing 787s. Auto-dimming windows, increased overhead storage, and those composite wings are now on order, and it sounds like things are definitely coming sooner than later—Transaero has already laid out a down payment.

Check Out ANA's Spiffy New Dreamliner Livery

Where: Japan
January 2, 2012 at 11:15 AM | by | Comments (0)

The first livery for the 787s. Not the new stuff.

Japan's All Nippon Airways has been quick to create some fancy new liveries and paint jobs for their fleet of brandy new Boeing 787 Dreamliners. However, the painters and workers in the hangars are still hard at work, as it looks like they’ll be using yet another special paint scheme for their latest deliveries.

As ANA gets some more and more new planes they’ll mix up the liveries just a little bit. The fresh batch of Dreamliners—these are the ones that will likely be the first to hit the nifty fifty—will still have “787” scrolled across the side, but the colors will be more aligned with the traditional ANA designs. This will also be the more permanent look, so expect this color scheme to be around for quite some time.

Here it is:

The Best Travel Newcomer of 2011 Is...

December 29, 2011 at 9:31 AM | by | Comments (0)

It's that time of the year again, the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2011 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics, encompassing everything from nudie scans to tarmac delays. Needless to say, we're ready for 2012, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2011 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.

Loads of new stuff hit the travel world this year, from new apps that track your checked bags to in-flight WiFi within China and beyond. However, when it comes to the year’s best travel newcomer there’s really no competition as the nod goes to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Norwegian Air Shuttle Confirms 2013 Will Be Its Year for Cheap 787 Flights

Where: Norway
December 21, 2011 at 8:13 AM | by | Comments (0)

We’re only weeks away from 2012, but we’re already looking forward to some exciting stuff scheduled to land further in the future. The new year definitely has cool plans in store for commercial flights, but 2013 is when Norwegian Air Shuttle plans to link the United States with Scandinavia—on the cheap.

There was some news kicking around about the airline’s plans for low-cost, long-haul routes, and it sounds like things are still moving full speed ahead. Best of all it sounds as though NAS will utilize Boeing 787s on the new routes, so this might be one of the cheapest ways to experience the Dreamliner in all its glory. Even if Norwegian Air Shuttle goes no-frills, some of the 787's standard features should still shine through. Just so you know, right now they’ve got like six of the brand new birds on order.

Japanese Manga Will Be Yours for the Reading Aboard JAL's 787s

Where: Japan
December 13, 2011 at 9:20 AM | by | Comments (0)

We were certainly all pumped up over the arrival of the very first Boeing 787 to All Nippon Airways, but now we’re getting just as enthused over the offerings arriving aboard Japan Airlines’ new bird.

To get everyone in the mood for a little slice of Japan the airline is planning to roll-out in-flight manga—like Japanese comic books—on all 787 flights. There’s going to be like 30 different comics from which to choose, and they’ll all be there for your reading pleasure right in the seatback entertainment screen. The airline is partnering up with Japanese publisher Shogakukan Inc and eBook Initiative Japan Co—just in case those names sound familiar to you.

It's Not Supersonic, But Boeing's 787 Just Set Some World Records

December 12, 2011 at 12:40 PM | by | Comments (2)

Just because the Boeing 787 is now finally flying around the globe doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of new airplane news. The latest tidbit from Boeing HQ has to deal with some world records that their new plane just set. It’s certainly no match for the Concorde, but when it comes to speed and distance, the 787 has been able to hold its own.

Boeing is proud of its latest creation, as the airplane just set the world distance record—for its weight class (kind of like boxing?)—by flying from Seattle to Bangladesh. The new record took place when the plane flew roughly 10,710 nautical miles after leaving from Boeing Field to Dhaka. Take that, Airbus A330—that’s the former record holder for the type of aircraft.

Holiday Shopping, Boeing-Style

December 6, 2011 at 12:01 PM | by | Comments (0)

With the holidays quickly approaching, we figured it might help to offer ideas for those on your list that fall into the #avgeek (aviation geek) category. Perhaps you even classify yourself under that hashtag; in that case, it can be your own wishlist.

After perusing all sorts of gift ideas, we decided to go right to the source of American aviation. BOEING! Yes, Boeing has their own e-commerce site catering to all things aviation, offering pages upon pages of gift ideas for aviation enthusiasts. Of course, there are the obligatory t-shirts and baseball caps, but we're taking a look at the more unique Boeing items:

Boeing's Brand New 787 Takes a Tour...a Round-the-World Tour

November 28, 2011 at 9:05 AM | by | Comments (0)

It’s time to check out the Boeing 787 in action, as the airplane manufacturer is getting ready to send its plane out and about on a world tour. They want everyone to know how great the new plane is—and oh ya—they are probably eager to score a few more orders for the composite aircraft.

For the next six months Boeing will be sending the plane all over the place—both to current customers and potential passengers—in hopes of sharing the next step forward in airplane technology. The only bummer is that there’s no stops planned for North America just yet, but we don’t mind heading out on a little bit of a road trip to see our airplane friend once again.

JAL: 'We're Getting 787s Too, You Know'

November 10, 2011 at 3:14 PM | by | Comments (0)

Our shot of a JAL 787 being built at Boeing's HQ. Notice the lack of engines

It feels like just yesterday we were freaking out over the launch of the very first Boeing 787 Dreamliner, by Japanese airline ANA. Well, their rival JAL wants everyone to know that they've got some Dreamliners coming as well, and they're taking them overseas to the US of A, and soon.

Like April 22, 2012 soon. If you've been dying to try the new plane and have been waiting for a oneworld airline to fly it, or just to experience it in the spring, then JAL has some airfares that may work for you. It's not a "sale" so much since the prices aren't cheap: from $1,500 roundtrip in economy between Boston and Tokyo-Narita or $6,500 in business class. Buy it before January 31, 2012 for travel between April 22 and September 30, 2012. We're thinking it would make an awesome holiday gift...!

Here's all the details to make it happen.

In-Flight Cocktail of the Month: ANA's 'Aromatic Kabosu'

Where: Japan
November 4, 2011 at 2:17 PM | by | Comments (0)

As many already know, we have a serious obsession with airline cocktails, and so much is our passion that we've created a whole first-Friday-of-the-month feature called In-Flight Cocktail of the Month, which highlights the special concoctions that flight attendants whip up with only a cocktail shaker, some tiny liquor bottles and a whole lot of hope that it won't make you drunk and unruly.

Now that the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner is finally up in the air and regularly flying passengers around Japan with All Nippon Airways, it's time to start thinking about making the trip. When you do, it's not only a unique experience because of the chance to fly the latest in commercial aviation technology, but also because ANA features little details in their in-flight service you don't find on other airlines.

For one, ANA still gives out metal utensils (stamped with the ANA logo) to first, business and economy passengers at mealtimes. For another, they have their own special non-alcoholic drink called "Aromatic Kabosu."
