When to Register as a Volunteer for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio

August 27, 2014 at 3:05 PM | by | ()

The 2016 Summer Olympics won't take place for two more years but planning is well underway, including the search for helpers.

Every four years hundreds of volunteers from around the world travel to the Olympics' host city to be a part of the festivities. Volunteer responsibilities range from providing transportation for the athletes and VIPs, to pointing tourists in the right direction.

All are welcome to apply as volunteers as long as they are over 18, have a basic education, and, of course, will be able to attend the games.

Rio 2016 volunteers will receive meals during their shifts, exclusive gifts, free online language courses, uniforms, and more perks in exchange for their hard work.

Volunteer registration opens tomorrow, Aug. 28. To apply, visit rio2016.com.

No Housing Provided

Unlike volunteers who worked at the Sochi games, Olympic volunteers in Rio will not be provided housing. That lack of housing would make volunteering an extremely expensive endeavor. Additionally, the site says that foreigners "must have a basic grasp of Portuguese".
