File 'The National Cherry Festival and Airshows' Under Reasons to Travel to Michigan

If your holiday weekend isn’t already filled with summer cookouts, fireworks, and trips to the beach then may we suggest a food festival? The National Cherry Festival kicks off in Traverse City, Michigan on July 5 and runs through July 12.

Parades, family goodies, and activities especially for the kids are just the beginning, as the festival does its thing along Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay. There are races from a 5K to a half marathon, and there are even two airshows scheduled to take place this Saturday and Sunday—featuring the Navy’s Blue Angels among other performers and planes.

Certain performances and exhibits will set you back a few bucks, and that’s the case if you want to see some of the festival’s concerts—like appearances from the Gin Blossoms and Collective Soul. However, most of the other stuff is free to enjoy. Like the free shuttle to help you get around town, so that you can leave your car and not stress about finding a parking spot.

As for the cherries there’s obviously a lot of those. Enjoy a cherry pancake breakfast, try some local delicacies at the downtown farmers market, grab a slice during a cherry pie eating contest, and maybe try your luck at the cherry seed spitting contest.

So yeah—if you can swing a trip to Michigan this weekend this festival is a do not miss.
