Help Keep the National Mall Clean on Independence Day

July 2, 2014 at 5:57 PM | by | ()

Fourth of July Fireworks on the National Mall in Washington DC is a great American tradition, albeit a messy one.

To help keep the Mall and Memorial Parks in tip top shape, they are looking for volunteers from around the country to help with their Independence Day activities.

The first group of volunteers will encourage visitors to recycle throughout the celebration. They will also collect recyclables, answer questions, and distribute information encouraging visitors to keep the Mall clean. Volunteers will receive t-shirts, water, and are invited to stay for the fireworks show at 9:00.

The second group will help pick up small pieces of cardboard that fall to the ground after the shell explodes in the air, preventing local wildlife from eating the debris. This volunteer event will take place from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Sunday July 6th.

Neither opportunity is very glamorous, but both give volunteers the chance to be an important part of D.C.'s biggest annual celebration.
