The Little Things: Icelandair's Little Pieces of Icelandic Poetry

In the midst of the bustle of travel, it's all too easy to overlook the details. We're talking about special touches others have stressed over just so you can enjoy a unique experience, whether you know it or not. Every so often we'll highlight The Little Things like this, so now you will know.

The Little Thing: Icelandair's dedication to Iceland culture, both in the airport and their aircraft.

Walking through the terminal near the Icelandair gates at Keflavik International Airport, and the Icelandic pride is palpable. Not only do the duty-free shops put fair isle sweaters and Icelandic licorice candy front and center, but the airport continues the theme beyond shopping and into the actual gate area. Thanks to windows printed with quotes from famous Icelanders in literature, you're likely to leave the country with a local poem or quote stuck in mind.

Above is one such window which, despots the horrid early morning weather outside, imparts a sunny attitude: "I believe in the life of the grasses and spring without end." - Steinnun Sigurðardóttir

Once onboard an Icelandair plane, you're even greeted with an explanation of the particular name of that aircraft (see "Eldfell" at right), and further fun Icelandic facts and quotes on the service items.

The funny thing is, we didn't even have to fly Icelandair to get this impression. Instead, our ticket was for WOW Air, their competitor on European routes. Although we boarded WOW's fuchsia plane and flew on to London-Gatwick, that little bit of Icelandair's Icelandic poetry stuck with us.

I love the literary quotes around the airport. Over Christmas the planes had descriptions of each of the 13 naughty Yule Lads throughout the cabin. Oh, and my most recent Icelandair flight was on Eldfell too ... ;)
