What Everyone Should Be Drinking at Today's Boston Marathon

It’s a pretty special day for this writer. I am on location at the Boston Marathon, and after last year’s horrific scene, it’s a beautiful thing to see how the city has come together today, to feel the connection and energy literally and figuratively running through the city. I’ll have a little recap for you tomorrow about what it’s like to be here as a tourist and spectator, but for now, I want to share how everyone is washing last year's bad taste out of their mouths.

For the third consecutive year, Sam Adams has brewed the race’s official beer, 26.2 Brew, the 26.2 representing the length of the marathon. I really have to hand it to Sam Adams, both for the beer and the way it has stood behind the community. After last year’s tragedy, the brewery donated all 2013 sales of the 26.2 Brew to the support of the victims and their families. They’ve pledged to do the same this year, with 100% of the profits going to marathon-related charities.

In an attempt to make a more lasting impact, Sam Adams filed for a trademark on “Boston Strong” 26.2 Brew so that they may rename the beer as a tribute and continued support for the victims of last year’s marathon. Beantown’s biggest brewery also said it will allow other members of the community to use the phrase “Boston Strong” in their product marketing so long as all the profits from its sale are donated to charity.

With that all said, it’s a great day to be a beer drinker in Boston. The 26.2 Brew is a Gose-style, orange in color and very approachable with its fruity, soft lemon flavor. It's light, dry finish and low alcohol content (4.5%) make it really nice on a hot day, or better yet, to quench your thirst after a workout.

If you happen to be in town at the moment and want to do your part, the beer is available exclusively at official race-related events, bars and restaurants along the marathon route, and in the Greater-Boston Area. For those outside the area that would like to help, you can donate to the very same cause here.
