Free Movies and TV Straight to Your Apple Device, Coming Soon on United

Coming this April to United aircraft: live streaming movies and TV shows directly to your Apple device. The scoop comes from Patently Apple. As with any major United announcement lately, however, there is both good and bad news.

The good: the new entertainment system will initially roll out onboard the airline's Airbus A319, Airbus A320, Boeing 747-400 and select 777-200 fleet, to offer passengers 150 movies and 200 TV shows for free.

The bad: It will only be accessible on Apple iPhones and iPads running iOS 7 with the United app, and on MacBooks (without the need to download an app). No word on if Android gadgets will eventually enjoy the same.

This is especially of interest for travelers in Economy and Economy Plus, who may find themselves on older United planes (like the 747s) that lack seatback TVs. Imagine boarding a lengthy international flight expecting to find the amenities on, like, every other plane, and instead finding nothing but an in-flight magazine. Without a book, iPad or similar worthy distraction, you're just going to sit there for hours and hours, going stir-crazy.

As luck would have it, we're actually going to experience both ends of the situation over the next couple weeks as we fly on an old United 747 to Sydney (14 hours without seatback entertainment!) and back on a 777-200. Hopefully United will flip the switch to this streaming i-device technology on their 777s on the dot of April 1, so we can see firsthand if it's worth the hype.
