What's Up with the Futuristic 'Theme Building' at LAX Airport?

You guys, we have a sad bit of news to share. The Encounter restaurant in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles International Airport has closed its doors, with no indication that it'll ever again welcome visitors for overpriced eats.

We previously shared our tips for making a long LAX layover a little more interesting by popping out of the terminal and heading up to this restaurant. Now that it's closed, there's no longer much reason to leave the secure side of the airport for a breath of Los Angeles air.

Airport officials are looking for a replacement restauranteur to take over the iconic space. Alas, with upgraded food options like "food trucks", gourmet cupcakes and super cool mega lounges coming into LAX, at least offerings are on the upward trend, enough that we awarded LAX our Most Improved Airport of 2013 award.

Rest assured, if you do have the time and care to brave the long TSA lines, the Theme Building's observation deck is still open to visitors from 8am to 5pm on weekends only. Now, who wants to put money on the first airline to inquire about making this a special airport lounge?
