Sunday Sunday Sunday! The 'No Pants Subway Ride' Takes Over 59 Cities Around the Globe

Though it's been a brutal winter so far, 'tis still the season for wacky urban stunts, from Santacon to Polar Bear Plunges, and one of the world's most rapidly spreading annual "flashmob"-type events is coming up this weekend.

We're talking about the No Pants Subway Ride, which Improv Everywhere began over a decade ago in New York, and which now has spread to include a whopping 59 cities, from Paris and Philadelphia to Beijing and Brisbane.

The 2014 ride, the 13th annual, will go down on Sunday, January 12. As veterans of the NYC No Pants rides, we can vouch for it and say that it's all in good fun, though it's getting a little big (literally) for its britches; so many people now do the Ride that you could be sharing a subway car with no one else but no-pantsers. Sure, it's awkward at first—you remove your pants on the subway, silently, mid-ride—but that's part of the deal.

The event is free, but it does come with rules. Be prepared to stand outside in the cold for an hour getting organized before heading down into the subway tunnels to de-brief. These days, with thousands participating, the cops know what's up and smarter Sunday commuters may take the bus.

To keep the disruption to an "all in good fun" level, make sure to wear clean underwear and keep to the non-sexual vibe. It's not about seeing someone else in their underwear, but the absurdity of everyone gaining a disregard for pants at the same time. It's weird, we know.

And that's why it's fun.
