The species in question is cichlid. The gentleman was caught trying to get them through customs at Auckland. He had hidden them in his cargo pants, inside two water-filled bags. The bags leaked, which gave rise to a series of suspicions among the customs workers. Or as one local news outlet described it, "the man's cargo pants had bulging pockets and water was seeping through the fabric."
The smuggler could have gone into the bathroom, gotten rid of the fish, and called it a day. Instead he made a gallant effort to walk through customs with water leaking down his leg. Bold and probably the humanitarian thing to do. It's not the fish's fault they were picked up by this guy. They didn't deserve to get flushed down the toilet.
And yet - as the arrest indicates - a decidedly stupid move nonetheless.
Final point: the man had landed in New Zealand after a flight from Australia. Someone in Australia's airport security system has some explaining to do.
