Tis the Season to Sit on an Aircraft Carrier and Watch Free Movies
No plans for a Friday night in New York City? Have we got a recommendation for you.
2013 marks the 5th annual outdoor summer movie series at the USS Intrepid, where films are screened right on the open deck of the aircraft carrier for FREE. Basic admission to the Intrepid typically costs $24, and at least with the free screening you'll have the privilege of walking around the flight deck for nothing out-of-pocket.
This season sees six films on the docket, all with a central hero figure. Yes, you can chillax with a sub sandwich on the flight deck of the ship, right next to a slew of military fighter jets and helicopters, while watching Maverick pull aerial stunts in "Top Gun."
The 2013 screening schedule:
June 21: National Treasure
June 28: Jaws
July 26: Star Trek (1979)
August 2: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
August 15: Top Gun
August 23: The Karate Kid
The Intrepid encourages moviegoers to bring their own lawn chairs, picnic baskets and blankets, but leave the booze at home.
Be sure to have a place in line at the west side highway entrance to the Intrepid when doors open at 7:30pm each screening night. Seating is first-come, first-served and there is no admission after 8:30. It's a tight window, but for something this awesome and this free, it's totally worth it.
