Taking the Most Touristy Tour of All at the St. Croix Cruzan Rum Distillery

April 25, 2013 at 3:52 PM | by | ()

No trip to St. Croix is complete without getting up close and personal with one of its most famous exports - Rum. The Cruzan Rum Distillery has been making some of the most popular rum in the Caribbean for more than 300 years.

For just $4, visitors can take a tour of the factory and see exactly how the rum is made and distributed. When you arrive at the distillery it is easy to see why their motto is "Welcome to the Don't Hurry". A cool breeze seems to drift through the open-air gift shop/bar/seating area even on the warmest days and, considering the work being done, the estate was surprising calm and quiet. Of course, the sweet smell of molasses wafting through the air doesn't hurt either.

The tour is very informative and suitable for all ages. It includes a walk along the catwalk overlooking huge vats of simmering molasses, a look at the rum barrels being filled and stacked four or five high in the warehouse where they will age for at least two years, and a stop at the rum's processing area where it is prepped for its final journey to Kentucky.

After the tour, which only lasts about 20-25 minutes, everyone is given two free drink tickets at the bar where they'll make anything you want (as long as it includes rum and they have the rest of the ingredients). When we took the tour the drink of the day was a delicious concoction of various rum flavors and fruit juices called a Fruit Basket. The drink alone was worth the price of admission.

The Cruzan Distillery is located at #3 & 3A Estate Diamond Frederiksted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Island, 00840 and is open for tours on weekdays only. There is no need to make a reservation, tours leave every ten or fifteen minutes throughout the day. Learn more about the Cruzan Distillery at cruzanrum.com.
