Someone with a lot of money is getting into the airline business, as it looks like there’s going to be another carrier joining the marketplace over in Asia. The details are just coming in now, but if things go according to plan the first flights might hit the skies before the year is over.

Neak Oknha Kith Meng isn’t quite Sir Richard Branson yet, but the guy is loaded and ready to start an airline. He is teaming up Philippine Airlines for the new venture, and the new carrier will be called Cambodia Airlines. Just be sure not to confuse the new carrier with a current carrier, as Cambodia Angkor Air is already flying around the region.

It sounds like Airbus A321s will initially be used for all the flying fun, as they are already on the schedule to be leased for the carrier’s international flights. Back at home they might end up using some Bombardier Dash 8s to get the job done.

There’s still plenty to be done before the first flights take off, but some reports indicate that the domestic options could be available as soon as June. After that, it might just be October for the flights that head to other countries. Sounds good to us, as it's always nice to have a new option for a holiday in Cambodia.

I reluctantly flew Cambodia Angkor Air last year and was actually very pleasantly surprised, but the only reason I dared fly them - since everything I had read about Cambodia's air safety records was dire - was because Vietnam Airlines does all their maintenance for them, in HCMC. Not sure what Philippines Airlines is like safetywise, but they might have an uphill battle for this one :(
