United's Newest Fee Will Get You on the Plane Faster

Another week another airline fee, and this time it’s all about speeding through the airport. United is just the latest carrier to provide convenience in exchange for cash, as they’re hoping that you’ll gladly part with a few bucks in favor of a shorter line at airport security.

The new option starts at just $9 each way, and United is calling it Premier Access. Usually it’s just reserved—for free—for their more frequent fliers, but now one and all can rub elbows with the airline’s elite as they make their way through the security line.

This will also get you onto the airplane a little bit faster as well, so you might just be able to claim victory in the battle of the overhead bins. You’ll be assigned to board in Group 2 which is the same group as gold and sliver frequent fliers, so that’s not too shabby for a few extra bucks.

We went ahead and started to book a faux flight to see how much this Premier Access would set us back for priority boarding, check-in, and security. For a flight between JFK and LAX it would be $39 for each segment, or $78 for the whole itinerary—so you’re not really saving anything when booking all flights together. It’s definitely up to you to figure out if it’s worth it, but for us—we’re going to pass for now.
