The AA 777-300ER

There's something new in the air. Smell it? That's the scent of a refreshed American Airlines and their shiniest new toy: the Boeing 777-300ER. AA is the first US airline with the plane and we just stepped off one of its first flights. So let's talk about it.

The Jaunted Series on American's Shiny New Toy

1. The New Hotness
2. Getting High
3. The Final Word

This is an American Airlines plane?! NO WAY.

WAY.

From the fresh paint job in the "new American" livery to the mood lighting and seatback touchscreen TVs, it's hard to believe that this 777 belongs to an airline whose biggest headlines of recent swirled around its bankruptcy. Well, we've flown bankrupt airlines before (cough Alitalia cough) and we've flown the old American a bunch, and what we just experienced is so completely unlike those that it's shocking (in a good way).

The folk at American Airlines must not have had much sleep lately, because the reason for this massive improvement is the rollout of new feature after new feature, all of which you can find onboard the 777. Things like in-flight satellite WiFI (we instagrammed from over Nova Scotia!) and new food choices (mmm smoked salmon on spring pea blinis) are just the tip of the iceberg. So here's an exhaustive look at all the new hotness on American's 777-300ER:

What's new in Main Cabin & Main Cabin Extra

· The seats: all with updated materials and greater recline (more knee room!). Main Cabin Extra is a 3-3-3 seat configuration, while Main Cabin is 3-4-3.
· Touchscreen, 9-inch seatback Panasonic monitors for in-flight entertainment. They're pretty great, trust.
· Every seat has one (very easy to reach) AC power outlet and one USB plug

What's new in Business Class

· The seats: totally new for American, all Business seats are lie-flat with direct aisle access. No more middle seats in biz! The layout is 1-2-1, each seat is outfitted in new materials and has one AC power outlet, one USB plug, a 15.4" touchscreen monitor, and Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones.
· Amenity kit: a case with an Eames design pattern contains socks, an eyemask, Akhassa cosmetics and other necessities. There are also black, closed-toe slippers.
· A redesigned menu with upgraded meal options, including American's signature ice cream sundae.
· Updated china, flatware and glassware.
· A walk-up bar (the first US carrier with one!) stocked with self-serve snacks, sandwiches, cheese plates, mini desserts and beverages.
· Dedicated overhead bins (nearly one per seat)
· Updated lavatories with clean design and sinks inspired by those in upscale hotel restrooms

What's new in First Class

· The seats: an "updated and enhanced" lie-flat Flagship Suite seats in a 1-2-1 configuration at the front of the plane. Each seat has direct aisle access, plus digital touchscreen controls, two AC power outlets, one USB plug, a 17" touchscreen monitor, privacy dividers, and Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headsets. The lie-flat bed measures 6'8" long and has drop-down armrests for maximum width.
· Turndown service: When it's time to have a snooze, First Class seats undergo a turndown service with pajamas and slippers, plus a new premium duvet and pillow.
· Amenity kit: Is it an iPad sleeve or an amenity kit? The new First Class kits sport an Eames design pattern and contain Dermalogica skincare products and other "travel necessities." The shape is then perfect for reuse as a tablet sleeve.
· Wine tasting: Travelers in First can request a wine sampling flight, complete with a tasting card.
· Updated meal options including an amuse bouche, soup, customizable pasta entrees, American's signature ice cream sundae and a "sweet treat" prior to landing.
· Upgraded china, flatware and glassware and the addition of a mimosa to the pre-departure beverage options.
· The walk-up premium bar with more snacks and beverages may be back in Business Class, but First Class is more than welcome to it.
· Updated lavatories with clean design and sinks inspired by those in upscale hotel restrooms

We flew as a guest of American to experience the new plane, but the flight itself was a regular one, with regular paying passengers, a regular flight crew, on a regular route, with a regular passenger experience. All photos and opinions are completely our own.

Where does it fly?

Is it just for longer-haul trips?

where

Current routes right now at JFK-LHR, DFW-GRU & DFW-LHR. Will get into this in the next part of the series!

Aircraft photo is mislabeled

I flew this aircraft last week from London to DFW. Notice the control tower in the background - this photo was not taken at JFK. The tag line should begin "The AA 777-300ER at LHR"
