The US State Department Shares Safety Tips for Gay Travelers

In just the last year, America has made some great strides in LGBT communities with the advancement of multiple states' marriage equality laws and the 'Big O' announcing his support for all gay Americans. Now it's the State Department's turn to get in on the gay ol' fun.

When it comes to gay rights, there are places way better at it than the US—we're looking at you Tel Aviv—and on the flip side, there are nations who fail miserably. The folks we elected into office have opened up an info portal for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender travelers to visit, to ensure that international travels are smooth.

If you're a gay jet-setter who just doesn't have the time to sit down and read the dedicated webpage, here's a few of the best tips:

· Register for the Smart Traveler Program. This is independent of sexuality, color, creed, taste in music and shoe size. All you do it register your intention to travel and then the State Department will know where you are and send relevant email alerts warning of possible danger. It's well worth it, trust us. Just do it here.

· Remember you are a guest in the foreign land, so their laws apply. Don't be that stupid tourist who says, 'But, I didn't know!' There's the internet to avoid this--use it.

· Resist the urge to engage with 'overly friendly' locals. The criminally minded tend to prey on the laid-back nature of LGBT scene.

· Reserve your hotel room with knowledge. Some hotels will not allow same-sex guests to stay in a room with one bed. It's best to inquire before booking.

We love the inclusion of LGBT travelers in the government's considerations for citizens abroad and hope this is only the tip of the iceberg for changes to come!
