The US Airways and American Airlines Merger Could Happen As Soon As Next Week

We’ve been following on the on again off again relationship between American Airlines and US Airways for quite some time. However, the latest from the airline industry rumor mil indicates that this might be the last weekend where the two carriers will remain as singles. We’re not sure if some kind of airplane bachelor—or bachelorette—party is planned, but both carriers have plenty of flights in and out of Las Vegas—ha.
Anyway, if the stories are believed to be true it should only be a matter of a few days before we hear about the plans for US Airways and American Airlines to finally shack up and to create one big happy airline family. They’ve got the new look, so now all they have to do is figure out pretty much everything else.
The pilots have been onboard for quite some time, and now it sounds like the suits are finally accepting that that this might just be the best way to move forward. The announcement could be made as soon as next week, as the combined carrier would be the world’s largest—at least when you look at revenue.
Don’t stress if you have huge stockpiles of frequent flyer miles, as those won’t be going away anytime soon. In all likelihood things will just be merged, and you’ll have more destinations from which to choose. Sure things could change for the worse—or even the better—but for now it’s just going to be a waiting game to see what shakes out. Even if a merger is announced next week, we’d expect at least a year before we really see the changes start to kick in.
