A Special British Airways Course Seeks to Beat the Fear of Flying

Confession: I used to be afraid of flying. I would fly, so it wasn't enough of an all-consuming fear to keep me off airplanes, but I would get terribly nervous during takeoff though climb, and especially during turbulence. This is not abnormal as many, many people suffer from varying degrees of a fear of flying. I conquered my fear by flying more, and more, and more, and eventually I learned to love and even look forward to being in the air.

British Airways offers courses—titled "Flying with Confidence"—to overcome fears like this, and though they typically take place in the UK, they'll be mounting a special course in New York City this April. Virgin Atlantic offers a similar course, but we're afraid their iPhone app is the closest to the USA it's getting.

The British Airways "Flying with Confidence" New York session will take place April 27 and it costs 308 GBP ($467) per person. This includes and a final orientation flight, to practice all you've learned. If you're still a little antsy, a friend or relative may accompany you on the flight for an additional 150 GBP ($227).

Full details on the flight:

The day concludes with an actual flight on an aircraft, lasting 45 minutes. Passengers are accompanied by a team of psychologists, pilots and cabin crew. During the flight, a pilot gives a running commentary explaining the various phases of the flight and just what is happening. This aspect of the course has been found to be very reassuring and valuable, helping people overcome their fear of flying.

Registration is possible online at their official website, and there's even info for upcoming sessions at London-Heathrow, London-Gatwick and Edinburgh.
