It’s been a few months since we introduced you to the newest idea in airport parking and rental cars—FlightCar. Just in case you need a brief refresher, basically FlightCar offers the opportunity for those parking at the airport to rent out their cars while they’re not using them. Seems like a clever idea if you ask us, and now it looks like the first cars are available to rent.
Up first is San Francisco International Airport, and they’ve got room for those looking to rent out their cars and for those looking to rent cars. Rates are supposed to be competitive with what’s offered from the big boys, though FlightCar is so far claiming they'll have 50% cheaper rates than the usual rental car companies. Free insurance, free GPS, and pick-up right from the terminal look to set FlightCar apart from the usual suspects in the rental car garage.
We tried to check things out for this upcoming weekend, and sure enough there were plenty of other peoples cars available for rent. Our one-day rental was pricing out as low as $15 per day for a 2004 Scion xA, but the 2008 Mazda Miata for $30 might be a better option for a weekend in the California sun. Take their search engine for a spin, as you’ll be able to filter down to the type of car, type of transmission, and all kinds of preferences.
For those looking to add their car to the rental car market, they’re ready for you—they even have a special program for airline employees. You get free gas, a free car wash, free parking, and you’re covered for $1,000,000 in liability coverage, as well as comprehensive, collision, and theft coverage. We’re pretty enamored with this idea, and are looking forward to maybe just testing out things for ourselves sooner than later.
