Nok Air's Nearly Nude Flight Attendant Calendar Ticks Off Thailand

What is the turn of a new year without a flight attendant calendar controversy? This year, the award for naughty airline calendar goes to Thai budget airline Nok Air, whose slogan is "We Fly Smiles."

They also apparently fly scantily clad, as Nok's Facebook previewed three photos from the calendar as part of a contest to win a free copy. Each of the teaser photos (shown here) are now angering the Thailand Ministry of Culture, on the grounds that the image doesn't promote the country in a proper, positive light. That doesn't mean the Ministry of Culture can stop Nok from printing their calendars, though, so the contest to give away 300 of them continues.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being "not even doing a double-take" and 10 being "too sexy for the skies," we'd give the Nok calendar a 3. It's even more restrained than Snap-on tool calendars, and we take this view mostly due to the fact that the women in these Nok photos aren't even Nok employees—they're paid models. They also don't strip off any of that clothing, unlike the famously nude ladies of recent Aeroflot calendars.

The real ladies aren't too far away from being bikini models, owing to the airline's policy to run their recruitments like beauty contests, so actually it's pretty odd they found the need to pay professional models. Weird.

Excellent!

I've been a fan of Nok ever since I learned of their existence right here on Jaunted. Excellent livery and a fun playful attitude towards air travel are a win/win in my book. I'm surprised these three images are getting Nok such negative publicity. After all, Thailand is the prostitution capital of Asia, right? I mean, I suppose maybe we aren't supposed to acknowledge that? In any case, sexy planes and sexy ladies for a sexy calendar that promotes brand awareness. I'll probably never have the chance to fly Nok, but thanks to their marketing approach I'm a fan, and in the end, that's what it's all about, right? PS. I'm not normally into skinny chicks, but... Wow! ;-)
