Lounging Around Vienna Airport's Groovy Gate Furniture

Where: Vienna International Airport (VIE), Vienna, Austria

If you’ve sat and waited at one airport gate for your flight to board, you’ve pretty much waited at them all. Sure, there is the idiosyncratic experience of open-air lawn chairs in the tropics or something equally unusual in other far-flung destinations, but most bear a depressing resemblance to each other: immovable rows of rigid chairs that will give you a numb butt way before it’s time to get on board.

That’s why we were so happy to come across something different during a recent departure from Vienna International Airport (VIE), where you can find these leather-clad, multi-faceted lounge islands.

A number of them were spread around the gate area, which had some traditional seating too. Most people were foregoing the standard chairs though, and settled in on these. A group of friends was picnicking on one, and a family had the perfect place to keep their kids entertained (and contained) to a section of another.

Want to sit upright and get some work done? You’re covered too, with smaller pods that contain four work spaces, with double power outlets and handy privacy screens.

The gate furniture certainly made our wait at the airport a lot more agreeable (this traveler has no status with Star Alliance and were flying economy, so we had no lounge access). We’d love it if more airport operators would invest to come up with some comfortable and funky seating options at the gate; most of us have spent, and will continue to spend, plenty of time on them.

We were traveling on Austrian Airlines, which uses Check-in (Terminal) 3, the most recent addition to Vienna Airport. Other airlines that use Check-In 3 include most Star Alliance members (Austrian Airlines is part of the Lufthansa Group), as well as Emirates and Qatar Airways.
