We figured the little grey line on the map—or was it blue?—would definitely be a short cut back through Mareeba to the main road along the shore. Pavement led to bumpy gravel, which eventually turned to dirt, which eventually meant we were majorly lost.
Even with our less than awesome navigation skills—at least in the moment—our little detour turned out pretty well. We made a pit stop at a nice McDonald's featuring even nicer WiFi, and we sure saw a whole bunch of termite mounds. It wasn’t quite the Outback, but nonetheless we enjoyed the little adventure. And we now know that Mareeba features 300 days of sunshine per year—at least according to their "welcome to town" signage.
