The sanctuary is located in Varadero, a peninsula located on the north side of Cuba. And, though there are some restrictions in place for Americans traveling to Cuba, volunteer organizations have gained access to the country, so you can still contact AEI to discuss the possibility of participating in this experience.
Because the area is a popular tourist destination, many animals are affected by the loss of habitat, including several species of bats. AEI's partner organization does hands-on field research to help support the bat population.
The trip includes airport pick up and drop off (at closest airport), beach-side accommodation, meals, transportation to and from research sites, on-site training, nature tours, medical support, and more.
The expedition takes place May 3 – May 10, 2013 and costs $1545 (Canadian). For more information, visit AEI.
