You Won't Believe What Airport Ranks Highest for Healthy Food

When it comes to delicious and nutritious the airport usually isn’t the place to look for food; however, we realize that sometimes the terminal is your only option. The good news is that one group has kind of gone through the options available in the concourse, and they’ve ranked the best—and worst—options available at airports throughout the nifty fifty.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is the group behind the latest list, as they crunched the numbers—and menus—at some of the busiest airports in the land. They’ve been doing this since 2001, and since then the average scores have jumped a good 19 points or so. That’s good for the airport restaurants and good for our waistlines—it’s win-win.

Anyway, they looked at 18 airports, and they found that 76 percent of airport establishments now offer at least one kind of low-fat, high-fiber, cholesterol-free vegetarian option. You can head over to their website if you’re interested in their sampling methods and the other tidbits used to determine the winners, but if you’re just interested in the top spot continue reading on.

Number one this year is Newark Liberty International Airport, as the airport’s options from spots like Mediterranean Bistro, Qdoba Mexican Grill, and Market Fresh earned it the top spot for the first time. Rounding out the winners are Las Vegas McCarran International Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, and Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport. We're pretty shocked not to see San Francisco in the top, especially since their Terminal 2's entire focus is on fresh, healthy and eco-conscious.

The bottom of the list isn’t necessarily something to be proud of, but earning the last place honors is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Things in ATL went down a good 13 points from the previous year, but Asian Chao, Muffaletta’s on the Run, and Nature's Table apparently have some decent vegetarian options.

The rankings are all fine and dandy, but we won’t judge when you just need a slice of Sbarro or a burger—all in moderation of course.
