New Taxis for New York City to Make That Airport Ride Even Smoother

We knew that New York City had their eyes on a new design and model for their ubiquitous taxis, but now it looks like the plan is finally considered official.

Last week, the Taxi and Limousine commission approved the Nissan NV200 as the city’s new go to mode of transportation. It’s not going to be an instant upgrade for drivers and passengers, as the plan is to phase in around 13,000 of the new vehicles as older cabs are up for repair, replacement, and retirement.

The new taxicabs will feature enticing bells and whistles, as some will be equipped with outlets to charge your electronic goodies, and some even oversized sunroofs—they call theme skylights. There’s even steps to make it a little bit easier to jump in and out of your ride.

Even with the recent approval there are still some that question the ability of the new cars. They’re not all wheelchair-accessible, and there's been wondering about whether the fuel efficiency is actually better than that they’re replacing. All arguments aside, it’s pretty much a done deal, and the taxis will start rolling around the city late next year.

Just remember to bring a little extra cash if you want to experience that new taxi smell—if that’s even a thing—as rates just went up roughly 17 percent. Fares depend on where you’re going and all kind of other algorithms, but if you used to pay around $10 for your trip you’re now looking closer to $20. Happy hailing!
