Puppies and Kitties and Horses (oh my) to Get New Pet Travel Terminal at JFK Airport

It really seems as though traveling with pets has been quite the hot topic of the last couple months, as we experimented with it, then JetBlue launched a Pet Pass, then model Maggie Rizer suffered a tragedy with her dog. And it looks as though pet travel won't be excused from the news anytime soon, as JFK Airport announces the development of the $32 million animal care facility.

From tiny kittens to massive racehorses, the building will be able to care for all sorts of jetsetting pets, but services will stretch beyond just kenneling to include grooming, quarantine, a vet hospital, a rehabilitation center, lawn space and an aviary.

Why this and why now? The AP/WSJ reports:

'While most of our airport passengers walk on two legs, this new center will serve the important travel needs of our four-legged and winged friends, while helping to create regional jobs and significant revenue for the Port Authority,' said Pat Foye, executive director of the Port Authority.

Officials said the project would create 190 jobs, and create $50.5 million in economic activity during a 20-year lease period. The Port Authority said it expected to get more than $108 million in rent over that time frame.

But wait—there's more! The article goes on to boast that "officials said the new setup would be larger than animal facilities that are currently in use at the airports in Los Angeles and Miami." Exciting! Now if only airlines would lower their pet fees to make it far more economical to actually fly with them—this said as we debate a $250 United charge for roundtrip travel with an in-cabin pet, on a $161 ticket. Something's not right about that.
