How to Celebrate 'Hobbit Day' Even If You're Not in New Zealand

For J.R.R. Tolkien fans tomorrow will probably be better than Christmas, their birthday, and the release of the new Hobbit movie all rolled up in one.

Saturday, September 22 is Hobbit Day, which celebrates the 75th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit novel and the birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. To mark the big day, Hobbit fans around the world will throw parties and feasts, and some will even have journeyed to New Zealand to visit the filming locations.

In the U.S., TheOneRing.net's 10th Annual Baggins Birthday Bash will be held in Griffith Park, Los Angeles from noon to 6:00 p.m. and includes a potluck picnic, costume contests, games, and and impersonation contest.

The Dickens Tavern and Opera House in Longmont, Colorado is opening its doors to fans who will mark the day with an epic trivia battle, face painting, crafts, games, live music, and fireworks.

And, in Concord, NH, Gibson’s Bookstore is hosting an Elevenses (the third meal of the day for hobbits, after Second Breakfast but before Luncheon) in the store.
