Edmonton Airport Scores Big With Sports Fans

Where: Edmonton, AB, Canada

We haven’t even visited Edmonton International Airport, but their baggage claim area is now one of our favorites.

As part of a larger renovation of the airport, officials have just added three different sports-themed baggage carousels. The suitcase chutes and conveyor belts now feature graphics, logos, and colors from the city’s local sports teams. The Edmonton Oilers, Edmonton Oil Kings, and the Edmonton Eskimos (they’re part of the Canadian Football league) are all well represented.

Televisions feature highlights and team history, although, we’re optimistic that they’ll beam live coverage of the games sooner than later. There’s even some oversized players doing their thing while the suitcases rotate around them.

Even though we’re all about the awesome baggage claim area, there are still plenty of other things now available as part of the airport’s larger expansion. New food and beverage options include a Heineken Bar, something called Caffe Sorrentino, and the Belgian Beer Café. Plants, trees, and other live greenery also climb their way up a three-story wall bringing a little of the outdoors indoors.

We’re not planning a trip to Alberta anytime soon, but if we find ourselves there we’ll definitely be spending plenty of time at the airport. We’ll even be sure to check our baggage -- even if we have to pay a fee.
