Surprisingly Yummy Airline Meals: American's Comfort Food Hits the Spot

We've all had a terrible meal on a flight before. In fact, we have shown you some of the sadder trays slid in front of us. With this new series of amazing airline meals, we can revel in the airline culinary delights and give kudos to the airlines that got it right.

On a recent domestic flight we booked in First Class on American Airlines, we were offered the choice between a grilled salmon filet or ricotta stuffed pasta shells. Immediately our thoughts turned to the good home-cooking that warmed us up as a kid. Without deliberation, we instantly ordered the pasta shells for dinner and then settled back into our seats.

The meal: The meal tray came to us with a bowl of 3 large shells stuffed with herbed-ricotta in a tangy tomato sauce. To lighten up the meal, a considerable salad with fresh veggies including artichoke hearts and capers with choice of dressing. A bread roll on the side and, to finish off, a turtle cheesecake. Just one pet peeve: the absence of "real" salt & pepper shakers as the paper packets just don't cut it.

The taste: Now this is comfort food in the sky at it's best. The giant shell noodles filled with creamy cheese and topped with grated parmesan made us feel like we were back at the kitchen table. And since Mom always said, "eat your veggies," a plate full of salad loaded with different flavors was a perfect touch to make sure we didn't feel too guilty. Oh, we can't forget to mention the cheesecake with all of it's chocolately, gooey caramel goodness.

This was all on a flight from Chicago to New York-LaGuardia. Which means that there isn't too much time to get too comfy and go into a food coma. We just washed it all down with another glass of white wine. (Sorry, Mom) This is a regular meal in the revolving menus of AA and, honestly, it doesn't get old. It just gets more and more comfortable each time.

If you have had an airline meal that you just need to rave about, let us know via email here. We would love to hear about them and then, ultimately, add them to our airline bucket-list.
