Hertz Rents Cars, Electric Bikes, RVs and Now...Boats

If you've ever been to Amsterdam you've seen them—the groups of young tourists who think it'd be cool to rent a boat and explore the city's canals, but then just end up blithely pedaling their way up one or two before giving up and hitting a "coffee shop" the rest of the afternoon.

Well, the embarrassment of the cheapie pedalboat is nearing its end as worldwide car rental giant Hertz has announced that Rent A Boat, an Amsterdam-based rental service for non-sucky watercraft.

That said, it won't come cheap. Craft options on the official site range from 8 Euros per person, per hour for this metal one, to 18 Euros per person per hour or a flat 215 Euros per hour for this 1897 fully restored wooden boat. Obviously there is no good reason not to spring for the 18 per hour when a reviewer claimed this: "We felt like English aristocrats in this boat :-)."

And by the way: yes, that rental price does include a captain to do all the mooring, maneuvering and muttering of Dutch curses as necessary.

Boat Rental is Great!

I am just back from Amsterdam and a highlight was in fact renting our own boats! But I suggest skipping Hertz and renting from a local. We used MokumBoot and they were great! For about 36 Euro per hour per boat, we rented 2 boats that hold up to 6 people. It was so fun driving around the canals, having cocktails and snacks, and even our own on board "dance party".

Why not expand?

If they would just do this in Venice!
