Wish You Were Here: Singapore's Lau Pa Sat Festival Market

Greetings from Singapore! More specifically, the food hawker stalls of Lau Pa Sat Markets. These markets, just a smidgeon of the hawker stalls found around the country/city, are in the heart of the financial district and truly a gem in the shadows of some of the skyline's tallest buildings. Sure, the name and the location sounds touristy, but this is a favorite for locals alike.

Housed in a building that is just about 118 years old, the structure features iron work from the Victorian era. The market itself claims to be the city's first market center, but eventually turned into a food hawker center in 1973.

Cheap eats are the name of the game. Essentially, choose which type of cuisine you desire and then order up. Most of the hawkers sell Asian and Indian fare, but we did spy an Italian and "Western food" stall. Rest assured that we skipped over those.

Instead of food we could easily get at home, we chose Indonesian chicken satay, Shanghai dumplings, pork buns and beef ball soup. Since the temperature in Singapore is either hot and wet or just hot, we washed it all down with freshly squeezed sugar cane juice, winter melon tea, and iced longan juice. Our total bill of about $15 SGD ($12 USD) didn't break the bank!

Markets like these are all over Singapore and we would recommend to check out as many as you can. Maxwell Road, Newton Circus and East Coast Lagoon Food Village all come highly recommended.
