Ain't no party like a private island party...and that's even truer when we're talking about a special private island with a dark history. Like, say, Alcatraz.

Believe it or not, the entire island of Alcatraz is available for nightly private stays through the "experience service," Vayable. It's $600 for up to 20 people or $5,500 for up to 350 people and though the cost may be high, that money goes to the park service, not to ensure you're having a 5-star stay:

You will arrive by Ferry in the evening and learn about the island as well as offer your services doing some small volunteer work as the prisoners did (but now it's for preservation of the island). You will sleep in the D-Block and return on a ferry back to San Francisco the following day.

There were 36 segregation cells, and 6 solitary confinement cells in D-Block. You'll sleep on a bunk and a mattress, with nothing else. While your door may be open, there's nowhere to go, as the only way off the island after dark is to swim. The D-block was where the most dangerous prisoners were contained, locked in their cells for 24 hours a day.

What an ideal birthday or anniversary gift, right? Maybe a couples' weekend, with 9 other couples? BYOChisel.

Bad Information

I tried to book this a while ago. THis article doesn't say you have to be nonprofit and theres a lottery system. I've heard it can take years of applying before you get chosen. Also, whyhwould anyone say that $30 per person to go on a ferryboat and stay on Alcatraz for the night is expensive?

Did you try going through Vayable or through Parks? And the $600 is UP TO 20 people, so it's definitely expensive if you're just booking it for a few friends.
