Hawaii's Island Air Hulas to the Beat of a Refreshed Fleet

If you’re headed over to Hawaii anytime soon we’re pretty darn jealous, but you also should know about some new interisland flight options. In the past Hawaiian Airlines was pretty much the standard, with their jets heading back and forth between plenty of cities on most of the islands. Other carriers like go! Airlines and Mokulele Airlines are an option as well, but now it looks like Island Air might just be trying to squeeze its way into your mind—and wallet.

The carrier has been flying between the islands for years and years, but now they’re ready to go up against the big boys by revamping and refreshing their entire operation. New planes, new liveries, new branding, and even an updated website are all part of the new Island Air. Things are moving quickly, and the goal is to get everything updated as soon as this fall.

Up first are some of their new airplane options, as they’re scheduled to bring some different propeller powered options to both tourists and locals alike. They’re ordering up ATR42 and ATR72 aircraft to serve as interisland shuttles, as these planes are a little more fuel efficient than the models they’re replacing. The new fleet is scheduled to head into the hangar as soon as August, and after that the flying fun will start up.

Island Air is great in that sometimes that you can get into smaller airports that aren’t accessible by some of the other interisland carriers like Hawaiian Airlines. However, Hawaiian Airlines has this problem covered, as it sounds like they’re in the process of starting up their own turboprop subsidiary to fly to smaller airports, like Kapalua over in West Maui, as well as spots in Molokai and Lanai.

That’s not necessarily good news for Island Air, but we say a little healthy competition might be good for passengers. Regardless, we'd probably check out and consider Island Air once the refresh is complete—why not?
